What is a Digital Footprint?

A digital footprint is a trail of data created while using the Internet. It includes the websites visited, emails sent, and information submitted to online sites and through social media. A "passive digital footprint" is a data trail unintentionally left online, while an "active digital footprint" includes data that is intentionally submitted online, like sending an email or “liking” a post on Instagram.

Everyone who uses the Internet has a digital footprint, so it is wise to consider what trail of data is being left behind. While content can be deleted from social media sites, once digital data has been shared online, there is no guarantee that it can be removed from the Internet.

This month’s email focuses on informing parents and students about the impact of a digital footprint. To help children, teens and young adults make responsible decisions about what to share online, they need to understand how their online activities impact their current and future digital footprint.

Parents interested in learning more about privacy settings can check out this eSafety guide which provides information on a large number of games, apps and social networking sites.
