A special congratulations to Debbie Bachmann for receiving the PNW Campus Pride Alumni Award, a testament to her dedication and impact on the Honors College, PNW, and the community!
As we look forward to the summer, I want to thank everyone for your support in making the Honors College the very special place that it is.

Glide & Stride with Honors Pride
Honors College brought the energy to Bulldog Park for Glide and Stride with Honors Pride—and it was a total blast! ⛸️
The rink became our icy playground as students laced up their skates for an evening full of laughter, fun, and unforgettable moments. ❄
Whether you were gracefully gliding or fully embracing the wobble, you helped make it a night to remember! From seasoned skaters to first-timers, the ice was alive with smiles, cheers, and that signature Honors Pride 💛
Huge thanks to everyone who bundled up, showed up, and made memories with friends old and new. We love seeing our Honors community come together!
Celebrating Excellence at PNW Founders Day!
Following an incredible ninth annual PNW Founders Day Celebration, we’re proud to give a special shoutout to Mya Bell, who was honored with the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award!
Mya’s leadership, dedication, and academic excellence truly embody the spirit of Purdue University Northwest. This recognition is a testament to her hard work and the bright future ahead of her.
Congratulations to all of our award recipients, nominees, and years of service honorees—and thank you to everyone who made the celebration so memorable!
Honors Student Presents at International Nursing Conference
We’re proud to share that Honors student Leilany Porrata was recently invited to present her research at the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) Conference in Phoenix, Arizona!
The conference, which brought together nursing professionals and scholars from around the globe, focused on creating and sustaining healthy work environments—an essential topic in today’s healthcare landscape.
Leilani’s research, grounded in both academic rigor and real-world relevance, earned her a place among respected voices in the field. Her presentation reflected a deep commitment to improving the experiences of healthcare workers and the quality of care for patients.
We’re incredibly proud of Leilani’s achievement and the impact she’s already making in the world of nursing. Way to represent the Honors College and PNW on the international stage!
Dean's Day Out
The Honors College hit the city for a night of culture, connection, and unforgettable music at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where we experienced the brilliance of the Sphinx Virtuosi live in concert.🎻
Featuring powerful works by Black and Latino composers, the performance was a stunning showcase of talent and representation. The music, the atmosphere, and the artistry combined for a truly moving and memorable experience.
It was an honor to share this elegant evening with our amazing students and our very own Dean Swarts. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special outing!
Alumni Spotlight
We’re excited to share a special Honors College highlight—Colleen Harley, an Honors College alum, is now teaching Elementary Psychology as a graduate student here at PNW! 💛🖤
Colleen graduated just last year and is already making an impact from the front of the classroom. During her time in Honors, she completed several stacked courses, so she brings both experience and empathy to her role as an instructor.
It’s always inspiring to see our alumni return to support and uplift the next generation of Honors students. We know they’re in great hands. Go Colleen! 👏
PNW Internship Spotlight
Leo Winders
My internship with the Griffith Police Department’s Social Services division was very rewarding. I was given the opportunity to attend a multitude of different meetings, such as Supporting Addiction Free Environments (SAFE) lunch and learns and general meetings, an Opioid Fatalities Review meeting, and a High-Risk Gun Violence prevention for Juveniles meeting.
I also attended classes, such as Too Good for Drugs. I was also given the opportunity to participate in a few ride-alongs with Officers and observe evidence handling and review old cases. Lastly, I was able to shadow at Northwest Psychological Services and observe and aid in psychological assessments and IQ testing for Juveniles.
Since I did not have any specific duties, every day was different and new opportunities arose constantly.
PNW Internship Spotlight
Chloe Belford
During my internship at the Lake County Juvenile Complex, I had the opportunity to observe and engage with all eight departments within the facility. This comprehensive exposure allowed me to gain a well-rounded understanding of how the juvenile justice system operates from intake to rehabilitation.
I observed court proceedings, intake procedures, probation meetings, and detention operations, which helped me understand the unique roles each department plays in supporting and guiding youth through the justice process. Each day offered new insights into how legal, administrative, and therapeutic services are coordinated to address the needs of both the juveniles and their families.
One of the most valuable aspects of my experience was witnessing the collaboration among departments, especially between probation officers, counselors, and educational staff. I observed how these professionals worked together to develop individualized treatment and rehabilitation plans focused on positive outcomes.
I also learned about the challenges faced by youth in the system and the importance of early intervention, consistent mentorship, and community support. Overall, this internship not only deepened my interest in juvenile justice but also strengthened my commitment to pursuing a career in public service and youth advocacy.”
Study Away with Honors
🌿✈️ Honors Students Take on Costa Rica!🌱
A group of adventurous Honors College students joined Dean Swarts and Academic Advisor Allison Vickers over spring break for an unforgettable study abroad experience in Costa Rica! Centered around the theme of environmental sustainability, this trip gave students the chance to explore one of the world’s most biodiverse countries and see firsthand how Costa Rica is leading the way in balancing economic growth with environmental protection.
From lush rainforests to innovative eco-projects, students immersed themselves in the culture, connected with local communities, and gained valuable insight into what a sustainable future can truly look like. 🌎💚
Are You Smarter Than a Professor?
Turns out… you are!
Honor students brought the brainpower and came out on top in a fast-paced (and friendly!) trivia showdown. The room was buzzing (literally), as students proved they could hold their own—and then some!
Shoutout to Professors Irving, Ouyang, Kincaid, and Ness for being great sports—and to Dr. Swarts for keeping things running smoothly as moderator.
Whether you were smashing buzzers or cheering from the sidelines, your Honors spirit made the event unforgettable.
Stay sharp—rumor has it the professors are already plotting their comeback!
Debbie Bachmann Honored at Alumni Hall of Fame
Debbie Bachmann was recently honored with the PNW Campus Pride Alumni Award—and it couldn’t be more well-deserved.
For over 20 years, Debbie has been a tireless advocate for students, always going the extra mile to support, mentor, and uplift those around her. In her current role as Administrator of Honors Student Leadership and Programming, she continues to pour her heart into creating meaningful opportunities and experiences for students every single day.
PNW isn’t just where Debbie built her career—it’s where she met her husband, found lifelong friendships, and built a deep, personal connection to the university. As she often shares, PNW has played a huge role in shaping who she is.
We’re incredibly fortunate to have her compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to student success as a guiding force in our community. Congratulations, Debbie! 💛🖤

A big thank you to everyone who came out to support our students, faculty, and staff.
Graduate Spotlight: Felipe Oria, Class of 2025
The PNW Honors College is incredibly proud of Felipe Oria, who will be starting his post-graduation journey at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, working in the children’s intensive care unit.
Felipe’s compassion, dedication, and commitment to excellence have been clear throughout his time in the Honors College, and we know he will make a meaningful impact in the lives of young patients and their families.
Way to go, Felipe—we can’t wait to see all that you accomplish! 🦁💛🖤
