APRIL: Ms Webb
Science was always my favourite subject at school, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have gone on to university, where I learned from inspiring professors with a wealth of knowledge to share. I now aim to inspire that same passion for science in my students, just as my teachers inspired it in me.
Science is present everywhere in the world around us, and a robust science education is essential for equipping students with skills and attitudes that are valuable across every career pathway. Science is more than memorising the stages of mitosis or the development of atomic models; it is a way of understanding the world and making sense of it. While core knowledge is fundamental, my goal as a Key Stage 3 Leader is to spark genuine curiosity about the wider world beyond the curriculum, empowering students to use their understanding to make a positive difference in their future lives.
Scientists are deep thinkers who drive innovation and progress. They apply critical thinking skills to analyse information objectively, free from bias. They are problem-solvers who adapt and evolve to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. By instilling a lifelong love of science, we prepare students to navigate uncertainty with conviction and confidence.
A key part of my role at The Richmond upon Thames School is to nurture sustained enthusiasm for science among our Key Stage 3 students. By highlighting the integral role science plays in everyday life, students develop a deeper appreciation of its value. Throughout the curriculum, meaningful connections are made to the real world, from the science behind performance in sport, to medical breakthroughs that have transformed lives, to the chemistry involved in preparing a favourite meal.
I am proud to extend learning beyond the classroom through a wide range of extracurricular opportunities across both Key Stage 3 and GCSE. Visits to universities, museums and scientific institutions provide inspiring experiences that empower students and broaden their horizons.
I look forward to continuing to lead the science department from strength to strength, supporting our students as they grow their science capital and pursue new frontiers of success.
