Principal Message

Dear Explorer Families,

I hope you and your family are enjoying the crisp fall mornings and sunny afternoons.

As I visit classrooms and walk through our hallways, I am continually inspired by the energy, engagement, and hard work of our students and staff. We have settled into our daily routines, and our students are building strong connections with their peers and teachers. It is wonderful to see their curiosity, kindness, and enthusiasm for learning each day.

Reminder: Monday supervision begins at 10:00 a.m Tuesday-Friday supervision begins at 8:55 a.m. Please remind students who walk or ride their bikes to school not to arrive before that time.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Together, we are making this a wonderful school year!

Vocabulary Day

  • We are excited to celebrate our first-ever Vocabulary Day on October 30! Students are invited to wear a costume that represents a vocabulary word.

    Here are some ideas:
    Pajamas- Exhausted, Sleepy
    Princess Costume- Enchanted, Majestic
    Wearing all one color- Monochrome
    Superhero Costume- Brave, Courageous

Use your imagination! We can't wait to see all the different vocabulary words you come up with!👨‍🚀

    Please remember:

    • Costumes and vocabulary words must be school appropriate.
    • Students should arrive at school wearing their costumes.
    • Each student should have a sign displaying their vocabulary word and be prepared to explain its definition.
    • The word sign may be attached to the costume or worn on a string around the student’s neck.

Fall Conferences

Fall conferences are November 18-20th. Please keep an eye out for fall conference information from your child's teacher.

Veteran's Day Celebration

Help us honor our heroes! We’re creating a heartwarming Veterans Day slideshow and would love to include photos of your family members or friends who have served in the military. Share a favorite picture, whether in uniform, during service, or at home with military memorabilia. Every photo tells a story of bravery and dedication. Let’s celebrate these incredible individuals and their contributions to our country! Please email all photos to dee@sumnersd.org. Be sure to include:

  • Student Name
  • Veteran Name
  • Veteran’s relationship to student
  • Military Branch

In addition, you can decorate a star for your family member who served in the military. Please come into the main office and pick one up. You can put a picture of your loved one on the star and decorate it. They will be doing this activity in SEL class, but you are welcome to do one on your own. When it is complete, you can drop it off in the main office.

Together, let's show our gratitude and appreciation for those who have served our nation with courage and valor.

State Law and required attendance

The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District and staff care about the well-being and academic achievement of each student. We know that daily attendance is one of the most powerful predictors of school success and on-time graduation. Our goal is to have every student at school on time, every day.

State law for mandatory attendance, called the Becca Bill, requires children from age 8 to 17 to attend a public school, private school or a district-approved home school program. Children who are 6 or 7 years old are not required to be enrolled in school. However, if parents enroll their 6 or 7 year old, the student must attend full time. And, school districts are required, under RCW 28.225.020 and RCW 28A.225.030 to take a series of actions when students accrue absences.

Also by law, we notify parents/guardians when their student is absent. If a student reaches a certain number of unexcused absences the school will contact parents/guardians to create a plan to support good attendance. Find information about excuse and unexcused absences, tardies and attendance procedures in the district’s Student & Family Information Guide and Policy 3122 Excused and Unexcused Absences.

2027 STEM Fair Poster Contest Information

Calling all artists! The time has come for our annual STEM Fair and Art Show poster contest. Students of all grades are invited to submit an original piece of artwork to be considered for this year's promotional materials. The winning artwork will be featured on posters and flyers for the event, and the artist will be recognized on district social media and at the STEM Fair itself.

Check out last year’s winning art here: Click here

This year’s STEM Fair and Art Show will be held at Sumner High School on Saturday, February 20th, 2027.

Guidelines:

  • Submissions must be STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) related.

  • Submissions must include the phrase: STEM Fair and Art Show 2027.

  • Submissions can be hand drawn or electronic and should fit within the box on the poster contest entry form.

    • Please print out copies for interested artists.

  • Submissions must be completed by the student without aid from others.

  • Submissions do not need to state the date, time, or location of the event - this information will be available elsewhere on the poster.

  • Submissions must include the student name, school, grade, and teacher name.

  • Submissions must be received by Jeremy Martin at Central Office by the end of day on the due date, November 24th, 2026.

To submit an entry:

  • Students should submit their artwork to their art teacher, or to the main office of their school.

  • Art teachers and office staff should compile all entries and send them via district mail to Jeremy Martin.

Judging:

  • As in past years, submissions will be judged by Central Office staff on the following bases:

    • Visual Impact – use of color and design to capture the viewer’s attention.

    • Originality and Creativity—the design is unique and shows creative interpretation of the STEM concept.

    • Theme – uses the phrase “STEM Fair and Art Show 2027” and contains a visual representation of STEM

    • Craftsmanship – chosen medium is used to create a finished product that is neat, free from errors and/or stray marks.

  • The first place winner will be chosen by Superintendent Dent and last year's winner.

  • First, second, and third place winners will be notified, and will be included in a celebratory post on district social media and in our district newsletter.
