Message from the Superintendent
May 8 - Teacher Appreciation
Dear RSU 21 Community,
This week we celebrated teacher appreciation across the district. We have seen so much well-deserved appreciation in the form of gifts, letters, kind words, and plenty of food. I wanted to share my letter to the teachers with you in hopes that my gratitude and admiration might resonate throughout the community.
To our incredible educators,
As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible impact you have within our RSU 21 community. Across Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel, we don't just teach subjects; we have the distinct honor of changing the trajectory of our students and, in many cases, the trajectory of entire families.
Each day you step into our schools, whether at Kennebunk High School, Middle School of the Kennebunks, Kennebunk Elementary School, Mildred L. Day School, Sea Road School, or Kennebunkport Consolidated School, you are building the foundation for our students' futures. Your dedication ensures that every child in our district is seen, heard, and supported. Thank you for your hard work and your "heart work." We truly have the greatest profession in the world, and I am proud to serve alongside such a committed team in RSU 21.
"Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." — Theodore Roosevelt
When I think of our work, I think of the Starfish Poem. Originally written by the scientist and poet Loren Eiseley, this story serves as a reminder that while the world's problems may seem vast and overwhelming, our power lies in our individual actions. Each day you make a difference, even on the toughest days. Please know that you are appreciated and that the work we do is meaningful.
"The Starfish Poem"
An old man was walking on the beach one morning after a storm. In the distance, he could see someone moving like a dancer. As he came closer, he saw that it was a young woman picking up starfish and gently throwing them into the ocean.
"Young lady, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?"
"The sun is up, and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."
"But young lady, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You cannot possibly make a difference!"
The young woman listened politely, then bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the sea. "It made a difference for that one."
You make a difference!
Sincerely,
Martin Grimm
PS - I want to wish all of the mothers a very happy Mother's Day. None of this happens without you!

Take a Look, It's in a Book, It's This Week's Superstar!
If you haven't been reading much lately, I'll urge you to read this segment! This week's submission is an uplifting story about a hero who uses the power of literature to make their students happier, smarter, and more engaged in the world around them. Let's give it up for the librarian at Sea Road School!
If you've ever wondered if the perfect book for you exists, I assure you, it does, and Tori Turley will be the one to recommend it to you. The level of engagement and joy students display in her classes, during library recess, or just browsing the shelves between class is truly incredible, and contagious! Students can shoot hoops for books, participate in the winter reading Olympics, and most recently, they've enjoyed a visit from author and illustrator Jarrett Lerner! Tori is a true gem here in RSU 21!
Butterfly in the sky, I can fly twice as high... especially with Tori Turley's help! Thank you, Tori!!
*In our newest segment, The RSU 21 Community News will be highlighting anyone in our community (employee, student, or volunteer) that YOU think has done or consistently does something spectacular. To make a submission, please fill out this very brief form. *
Around the District - RSU 21 Highlights
Kennebunk Elementary School- It was a big week at KES! Our teachers were celebrated throughout the week with treats and messages of gratitude, thanks to KEPTA and our kind and generous families. We also held Pre K screening on Monday and Tuesday, and had the opportunity to welcome our next class of pre K students and connect with their families. Seeing the incoming children reminds us of just how much our students have grown this year!
Mildred L. Day School- Teacher Appreciation Week at Mildred L. Day School has been nothing short of spectacular, and our staff has felt every bit of it. Our incredible PTO pulled out all the stops this week — treating us to an elaborate breakfast buffet, an amazing taco bar lunch, fresh donuts this morning, and a week's worth of cold beverages and homemade snacks that appeared like magic and disappeared just as quickly.
To our MLD PTO (and all the parents who contributed) — from the bottom of our very full, very grateful hearts — thank you. We are lucky to have you, and we know it.
Kennebunkport Consolidated School- We are feeling the love this week! Thanks to KCS PTA, our teachers have been showered with gestures of gratitude all week long. Thanks for all the efforts to recognize the hard work and dedication of our teachers and staff members.
Sea Road School- This week, we took some time to celebrate our amazing educators during Teacher Appreciation Week. We really are so lucky to have such a caring, dedicated, and hard-working staff here at SRS. Every day, they do so much for our students - whether it’s helping them learn, supporting them through challenges, or simply making them feel welcomed and cared for. A big thank you to all of our staff for everything they do to make SRS such a special place for kids each day.
We also want to send a huge thank you to our SRS PTA for making this such a special week for our staff. Your kindness, generosity, and support are so appreciated!
Middle School of the Kennebunks- Students at Kennebunk Middle School recently sampled locally sourced flounder fish tots, made by Graffam Brothers Seafood of Rockport, Maine. The tots are part of an initiative by the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association (MCFA) to bring more accessible, locally caught seafood to K–12 schools.
Building on its Fishermen Feeding Mainers program, MCFA now offers ready-to-serve options like these fish tots, made with dab flounder, Maine potatoes, and vegetables. The recent tasting earned an impressive 95% approval rating, making it likely the tots will appear on the school lunch menu soon.
Thank you to the Kennebunk cafeteria staff, administration, and students for helping introduce more fresh, local seafood into our schools.
Kennebunk High School- Excitement is building this week around the Junior Prom on Saturday night. The KHS parent group did an outstanding job of recognizing teachers with a lunch provided by Smoke BBQ in Kennebunk.
Below are some pictures from the week! From top to bottom:
