Miners in the Middle
October 12, 2025

Principal's Message
It’s a short week here at Hartshorne Middle School — students are in class just two days before Parent-Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, October 15, from 8:00–12:00, followed by a staff work day in the afternoon. There will be no school Thursday or Friday for Fall Break.
Due to recent internet issues, we were unable to hold our Student Council/Class Officer elections last week, so voting will take place on Monday. Once our officer teams are elected, they’ll jump right into planning activities for Red Ribbon Week, which kicks off soon!
If any parents, guardians, or students are interested in serving on our school’s Safe Schools or Healthy & Fit Committees, please let me know. We’re planning to hold our first meeting this Wednesday.
6th Grade Families - Our 6th graders are full of energy and potential, but we’ve noticed they’re still adjusting to the higher expectations of middle school. When we return from Fall Break, we’ll be launching our “Becoming a Middle School Miner” Level Up Challenge to help students refocus on listening, being prepared, and showing respect. Over the following two weeks, 6th-grade classes will earn points daily for positive behavior and responsibility. Families can help by reminding students to bring their materials, take notes, listen carefully, and treat others with kindness and respect.
We’re confident this group will rise to the challenge and show what true Miner Pride looks like — and we expect every student, in every grade, to do the same. 💙🤍

HMS Building-Wide Expectations
Classroom Expectations
These are our school-wide expectations for our students. Positive behavior fosters an environment where ALL students can learn and grow. It is our hope that our HMS families will discuss our school-wide behavior expectations and encourage positive behaviors at school and home.
Common Areas Expectations
Our school-wide expectations extend beyond the classroom. It is important that students also realize they are accountable for their behaviors in the hallway, cafeteria and at all school sponsored activities on and off campus.
OSSAA has teamed up with COUNTRY Financial to launch the Gridiron Giveaway! This is our school’s chance to win a donation that will be presented live at the OSSAA State Football Championships, presented by COUNTRY Financial this fall. All you need to do is submit your information and give our school the opportunity to bring home the prize.

❌ Do not park or drop off at the main Middle School entrance/parking lot in the morning—this area is reserved for bus routes only. - Afternoon Pick-Up – Opposite of the morning: all pick-ups happen at the main Middle School entrance.
- Attendance Reminder - To be counted present for a class, a student must be in class for at least 30 minutes.
- Students more than 20 minutes late to a class (without checking into the office within that time) will be counted absent for that class.
- Students leaving more than 20 minutes before the dismissal bell will also be counted absent for that class.
Tips for a Successful School Year
To help you start strong, here are a few simple ways to set yourself up for success:
-
Be organized: Use your planner daily to keep track of assignments, projects, and important dates.
- Ask for Help Early: If something doesn’t make sense, don’t wait until you’re behind — talk to your teacher or counselor right away.
- Use Your Time Wisely: Stay focused during class, and finish your homework daily.
- Be present: Attendance matters! Being here every day helps you keep up and feel confident.
-
Get involved: Join a club, sport, or activity to make friends and try new things.
-
Be respectful: Kindness and good behavior make our school a great place to learn. A good attitude goes a long way!
Rest Well: Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep — and put those phones away at night so you’re ready to learn each morning!
LOCKER TIPS FOR A SMOOTH YEAR
Lockers are a middle school tradition—but they can be tricky at first!
-
Don’t overstuff it – Only keep what you need for the day.
-
Use shelves or organizers to make extra space.
-
Practice your combination until it’s second nature.
-
Avoid storing food—trust me, it will start to smell!
-
Do a weekly clean-out so you can always find what you need.
