"Hello, October!"

Marguerita Families,
We have an exciting month ahead filled with learning and fun. Next week, our 6th graders will head off to Camp Pollock on October 8th, where they’ll experience the benefits of outdoor learning through science lessons, hiking, ziplining, and archery!

Later this month, get ready for one of our biggest events of the year—PTA’s Marguerita Fall Carnival on Friday, October 24, from 3–6 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering at your child’s classroom booth, please reach out to your child’s teacher or our PTA. This is a large event, and much help is needed! Please remember that the funds earned at each classroom booth go directly toward field trips and extracurricular activities for that class. And to wrap up the month, don’t miss our Marguerita Halloween Parade on Friday, October 31, from 8:15–9 a.m.

Let’s make it a spooky and festive October together! 🎃

With Husky Pride,
Thomas Kohout

Assistant Principal's Message

October: Anti-Bullying Month

In the month of October, Huskies will take the pledge to look out for each other and be upstanders. Students who are upstanders speak up when they have a concern or when they see something that shouldn’t be happening. Students will learn how not to be a bully and will participate in recess and classroom activities. On October 22nd students are encouraged to wear orange as a day of unity against bullying!

🎃 R.O.C.K. Goals for the Month of October – Focus on OWNERSHIP!

At Marguerita, our R.O.C.K. values—Respect, Ownership, Cooperation, and Kindness—continue to guide our learning and interactions every day. This month, our focus is on Ownership, which means encouraging students to take responsibility for their learning, choices, and actions both in and out of the classroom.

Through our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) framework, students are reminded that taking Ownership can look like:

  • Coming to school prepared and ready to learn

  • Setting personal goals and working toward them

  • Admitting mistakes and finding solutions

  • Taking pride in their work and effort

We reinforce these lessons in our monthly R.O.C.K. assemblies, where we celebrate students’ growth, and in our Husky R.O.C.K. Star Store, where students redeem ROCKStars they’ve earned for making positive choices. Together, we are building a community where every student thrives academically, socially, and emotionally by living our R.O.C.K. values!

Be RESPECTFUL
Take OWNERSHIP
Be COOPERATIVE
Be KIND

Marguerita PTA - Scholastic Book Fair Report

📚 Thank You for Supporting Our Scholastic Book Fair! 📚

Husky Families, a big thank you to everyone who supported our Scholastic Book Fair during Conference Week! We appreciate all families who purchased books as well as those who volunteered their time to help make the fair a success.

Proceeds from PTA fundraisers, like the Book Fair, help sponsor field trips, special classroom activities, and our monthly R.O.C.K.STAR Receptions—all opportunities that enrich our students’ learning and celebrate their growth. While the exact allocation of funds will be determined by the PTA Board, every contribution makes a difference.

At Marguerita, we know that daily reading is one of the best ways to build strong readers and lifelong learners. Whether it’s a bedtime story, independent reading, or reading together as a family, each day of reading helps our students grow.

Thank you again for helping us foster a love of reading and supporting our Husky community!

Medi-Cal 101!

A big thank you to Garfield Health Center for joining our Coffee Chat this week and sharing such valuable information about Medi-Cal. Families learned that Medi-Cal provides free or low-cost health coverage for eligible California residents, offering the same essential benefits as Covered California, including doctor visits, hospital care, immunizations, vision and dental coverage, and more. Important updates include expanded eligibility for all ages regardless of immigration status beginning in 2024, as well as changes in enrollment and benefits that will take effect in 2026. Garfield Health Center also reminded families that they offer free assistance with Medi-Cal applications and renewals, ensuring everyone has access to the healthcare they need. 🌟 Marguerita’s Monthly Traveling Husky Award 🌟

At Marguerita, the Traveling Husky Award is given each month to a staff member(s) who goes above and beyond the call of duty for our students and families. This award celebrates those who make a significant difference in the lives of our Husky community through their dedication, care, and exceptional service.

For the month of October, we are proud to honor our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) instructional aides, Valeria Gonzalez and Veronica Gonzalez!

Valeria and Veronica consistently go the extra mile to support our youngest learners and their families. They create welcoming, nurturing environments for TK students who are just beginning their journey at Marguerita, helping new students transition smoothly into school routines and guiding families through the early days of school life. Their patience, kindness, and professionalism ensure that every child and family feels supported, confident, and valued. Through their daily work, assisting with instructional activities, providing individualized support, and fostering social-emotional growth—they embody Marguerita’s R.O.C.K. values.

Valeria and Veronica’s dedication has a lasting impact on our students, and we are thrilled to recognize them with this month’s Traveling Husky Award! Congrats!!

It’s been over a month since school has begun and it’s time to celebrate some good attendance! From the beginning of the year August 12 to September 22 (the day of writing) there have been 30 days of school.

I’d like to acknowledge some positive attendance, 95% or higher, in our classes from this time span!

Great job students and families! Thank you for bringing your children to school everyday and on time.

Additional Attendance Recognition!

In addition to our school wide attendance awards, classes and students can earn prizes for being at school everyday! Every class that has 95% or higher a month will receive a badge on their door to show off with pride. Every student who has one or less absences a month will receive free dress or an award. 🎃 Calling All Creators!

We’re thrilled that some of our 5th–8th grade students will be using our makerspace this month to design and build their own cardboard Halloween costumes! Alongside this fun project, students will also be diving into creative activities with our STEM teacher throughout the trimester.

To help spark imagination and support these hands-on projects, we’re asking for donations of household items (see link). Donations can be dropped off at the front office or sent with students to give directly to their teachers.

Thank you for supporting our young inventors and makers!

We need a name for our makerspace. Here are the ones our students came up with. Please click on the link to vote for your favorite. Thank you!

Traffic Safety Reminders

1. Pull your vehicle up as far as you can during the drop off/pick up times. This will allow the cars behind you to do the same.

2. Do not double-park when dropping off or picking up your students. Please make sure your student(s) access your vehicle curbside - not in the street.

3. Present Yourself at the Gate Campus Supervisors and Yard Duties will not release your TK-4th grade child if you (parent/guardian) do not present yourself at the gate. Please remember that this policy keeps your child safe during very busy gate release times.

4. No U-Turns: Please do not make a U-Turn near or adjacent to our school.

5. Do not park or leave your vehicle unattended: in any area that is not intended for parking (i.e., double parked, red zone, bus zone, etc.,)

6. Please do not park your vehicle in any driveway Please respect our neighbors and their driveways. As such, please do not load or unload your child while parked in any driveway.

7. Always cross the street at the crosswalk (or end of street). If your child walks to/from school, please have a conversation with them about always using a crosswalk and watching for oncoming traffic. Please do not encourage your child to cross in the middle of the street to get to/from your vehicle.

8. Recognize our school zone and posted speed limits- and obey all other traffic signs on and around school property.

9. Reduce your speed when traveling around the school.

10. Be aware of an unusually high concentration of children and families in and around our school.

11. Be on the lookout for school buses and children entering and exiting the bus.

12. Expect increased traffic and delays. Please allow yourself extra time when coming to and from Marguerita Elementary.

We want everyone to get to their destinations safely!

School safety is always our first priority! Our message to our students, staff and community is, “See Something, Hear Something, Say Something - Report it!” If there is a school safety concern or threat of violence, always report it to the school and police. Each one of us (students, parents, families, guardians, community members) play an important role in school and community safety. Never hesitate to report a safety concern.

Additionally, as part of Marguerita’s Earthquake and Disaster Preparedness Program we are requesting that each child be provided a Personal Survival Kit to be stored in the classroom. Should a disaster, such as an earthquake, fire, or flood occur, there is a possibility that your child/children would need to remain in school for up to 72 hours- especially if access to and from school is too dangerous or unavailable. It would therefore be necessary to have some food and drink to sustain your child during this time.

For more information on needed items, please visit [2024-2025] Survival Kit Letter and Content List
