A Note from the Principal
Week 12, Day 53/180
Did you know that the Jacobs Middle School has registered as a participant in The Great History Challenge? This national academic competition is based on the National Council for the Social Studies standards and gives students the chance to demonstrate their knowledge of ancient world, modern world, and United States history.
The first stage of the competition will take place in December when all students in grades 6 and 7 will complete an online quiz. The top scoring students in each grade will be invited to the regional round, which is a live, buzzer style competition that families are welcome to attend. Top performers at regionals will move on to the national competition in May.
To help students prepare, Ms. MacDonald and Mr. Fitzgerald have been running a history enrichment option during our enrichment block and will continue to act as coaches for students who participate. Any JMS student is welcome to join the enrichment group. To learn more, here is a short video that explains the format of the competition: https://www.greathistorychallenge.com/how-it-works.
In other JMS news, tomorrow is a JMS Spirit Day and Meeting. All JMS students are encouraged to wear their House colors.
Kindergarten classes braved the cold this morning to work with Ms. Saforrian, planting garlic in the Jacobs Garden, and then putting the garden to bed for the winter.
Lastly, following last week’s safety training, SRO Mahoney conducted a lockdown drill today. Students and staff responded promptly and appropriately, demonstrating confidence and preparedness.
Thank you for your continued support of our school. I hope everyone has a great end to the week.
-Mr. Shaw
