Quarter 1 Is Coming To A Close Quarter 1 Is Coming To A Close

Can you believe it? The first quarter of the school year ends on October 28!

Report cards will be sent home on November 4. Please keep in mind that teachers will close their gradebooks several days before the official end of the quarter, so it's important that you and your child stay aware of current grades, missing assignments, and any remaining opportunities to complete work. Don't wait until the last minute to check in with your child's teachers! We want every Blackhawk to finish the quarter strong. Check out your child's grades through the parent portal of Infinite Campus. If you don't have the parent portal, ask your child to pull up his/her Infinite Campus and show you.

I will share the dates for our Nine Weeks Awards in next week's newsletter, so be on the lookout!

Attendance Letters Attendance Letters

I have received several phone calls regarding the attendance letters sent home after student absences. Regular school attendance is essential to student success, and our school social worker and I work together to monitor attendance and support families when challenges arise. As required by district policy and state attendance requirements, we must send attendance notifications home at specific points throughout the year. For elementary and middle school students, these notifications may occur at 3, 6, and 10 absences, depending on the circumstances and whether absences are excused or unexcused. Please remember to send a note or provide documentation whenever your child is absent so we can accurately record the absence and determine whether it can be excused. At six unexcused absences, families receive written notification regarding compulsory attendance requirements, and the school works with the family to develop an attendance support plan. At ten unexcused absences, a formal notification is required regarding compulsory attendance law.

Our goal is not simply to send letters, but to partner with families, address barriers, and help every Blackhawk attend school regularly and succeed. If your family needs support with attendance, please reach out to us. Email Principal Honeycutt or School Social Worker Kendell Dover. We are here to help!

D-N-D Club Begins D-N-D Club Begins

Calling all adventurers, storytellers, strategists, and creative minds!

Our D-N-D (Dungeons & Dragons) Club kicks off this Wednesday, October 21, from 3:00 – 4:00 PM after school! Get ready for imagination, teamwork, epic quests, and plenty of fun as our students step into a world of adventure!

We can't wait to see what our Blackhawk adventurers dream up! Let the quests begin!

TSI School Designation TSI School Designation

Later this week, families will receive a letter, through email, explaining that North Buncombe Middle School has been identified as a Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) school. The letter will provide additional information about what this identification means, how it relates to our school’s ongoing efforts to support student learning, and the steps we are taking to ensure continued growth and success for all students. We remain committed to providing every student with the support, resources, and opportunities needed to thrive, and we appreciate your continued partnership in this work.

If you would like a paper copy of the letter, it will be available in the main office after October 26th.

PAGE - Partnership for Appalachian Girls' Education

PAGE’s mission is to educate and empower girls so they can become leaders in an ever-evolving Appalachia. We do this through after school and summer programming led by skilled facilitators - working scientists, historians, and artists - who create hands-on learning experiences and serve as mentors as well as examples of future pathways to success. Our year-round offerings combine interdisciplinary educational opportunities with supportive mentorships that connect girls with leaders in their communities and help them to build intergenerational relationships and lasting friendships. Our approach is focused on the whole student - from skills based learning, to healthy food offerings, to wellness activities - and is designed to help girls value and give voice to their own stories and to the stories of a vibrant Appalachia.

If your daughter might be interested in learning more about this club, or participating in this club, please email Principal Honeycutt.

The flyer below says the club will start Wednesday, October 21, but we are pushing that back until Wednesday, October 28th.
