7th - 18th June

Well what a fabulous week we had last week for sunshine although I did find myself fitting the stereotype of always moaning it is too cold and then moaning it was too hot!

A huge welcome to our new family and their three children who have joined the Pearls class. Already they have settled in really well and we welcome you to our family.

The ramp to the field is finally finished and the children have enjoyed using it at last.

Hopefully you will enjoy reading, seeing and watching what we have got up to over the past fortnight. There are some useful up and coming dates to note as well as more information on our online payment system.

Please let us know what you think to our new newsletter style too. We will be sending a fortnightly newsletter filled with what we have been up to and up and coming dates

Miss Bishell-Wells

Pearls

This half term in Pearls we have been taking a close look at the different minibeasts that live around us. We have been learning new and interesting facts about minibeasts every day.

Did you know that a centipede doesn't have 100 legs? Centipedes actually have closer to 30 legs.

When we had gathered out facts, we organised them into our own fact files. It's been a real hands-on experience these last few weeks as we have been hunting under every rock and log to get a close up glimpse of the magnificent minibeasts that live around us in their own hidden habitats.

We have also had the opportunity to listen to some authors and illustrators who have been talking to us about their jobs and giving us tips about how to write books and draw amazing illustrations. Check out our Twitter page for some of our amazing drawings.

Rubies

Rubies have had a fantastic start to our final half term of the school year- and we kicked it off in style with our brilliant beach day! The children came to school dressed for the beach and we introduced our new core story ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. After that, we learned all about how the Victorians changed the face of the British seaside and topped it all off with a beach fun afternoon where we tried out paddling, building sandcastles, volleyball, some games you’d play in an arcade and read books linked to the seaside. We’ve also been loving the author talks we’ve been taking part in from people like Julia Donaldson, Emily Gravell and Smriti Halls- getting to listen to the authors has inspired us to check out some new books in our book area!

Diamonds

In English, we have been finishing off and editing our diary entries about ‘A day on board Titanic’. We have been focusing on peer marking, careful checking then reviewing and improving our writing.

In Maths, we have been looking at data (pictograms, bar charts, line graphs) and we have been asking and answering questions using this data.

We have just started our new topic in Science ‘Sounds’.

This week we have also been focusing on reading and each day this week, we have had a daily online workshop with a different author.

Sapphires

Busy week in Sapphires, we have chosen our end of year performance and began our fair ground DT. We have started our new book in English, 'The Arrival', where we will explore the themes of refugees and immigration. The children have been angels in Maths where they have solved problems with angles. The Pop Up Literacy Festival has been amazing, lots of experience shared to get our imagination flowing. The children have typed up their letters to the Liverpool Titanic museum to persuade the curators who/what is to blame for the tragic loss of life and are eager to get a response.

Reading - Author Sessions

Reading is one of our school priorities and we feel it is crucial that all children can read. This week the children have all had the opportunity to watch at least four authors talk about their work, find out what inspires them and read part or all of one of their published books. They could ask questions which their authors then answered.

The school have purchased these books so that the children have the opportunity to read one of the authors books for themselves which will hopefully broaden the authors they choose to read.

Please can I ask that you encourage your child to read regularly at home. Children are rewarded for this and the school has invested a lot of money and time into trying to increase reading. There are help videos and more information on our website.

Up and Coming Dates Up and Coming Dates

The Coldcroft Shires Challenge!

We were so lucky that we were able to meet the Shire Horses and talk to the team even if it was raining.

A bit from the team:

The challenge we have set is for the team to travel from Gloucestershire up to Morayshire in North East Scotland.

The team consists of Millie and Willam - two of our Shire horses that work on the farm, Boo Boo Beithe the farm dog and myself as the carriage driver.

The journey starts on Saturday June 5th 2021 and the trip will take about eight weeks. We will travel about 650 miles (1050km).

The reason for this is to raise monies for Police Care UK and The Fire Fighters Charity. Two essential charities that support serving and retired police officers and their families and the fire & rescue service community.

An important part of their work is with injured personnel whether it is physical or emotional/mental health. These people risk much on a daily basis to keep us all safe when needed and protect us.

If you would like to support them you can donate here.

Reminder

Please can we remind parents that when picking up your children that you keep 2m distance and wear a mask (unless exempt). It is crucial we try to minimise any risk of spreading Covid-19 especially when local schools have had outbreaks this week.
