November 2025
Message from the Principal
Greetings SMS Families,
If it’s November, that means Veterans Day is near — and with it, our now-annual SMS Veterans Day Events are just around the corner. This meaningful tradition has quickly become one of the most anticipated parts of the fall season here at Springville Middle School.
On November 6, our 8th-grade students, under the direction of SMS Social Studies teacher Mr. Beiter, will honor our local veterans as part of their ten-week study on the major wars in American history. The day will begin with a visit to Shuttleworth Park in the village of Springville, where students will view the memorials honoring local service members who gave their lives in conflicts ranging from the War of 1812 to more recent engagements.
During the ceremony, students will lay a wreath, hear reflections from veterans, and listen to “Taps” performed by SMS students under the direction of Mr. Brawn, SMS Music Teacher. The National Anthem will also be performed by several students led by their Choral Director, Mrs. Cummings.
After returning to SMS, students will participate in a veterans panel discussion featuring members from the following local organizations:
American Legion Post 431 of Concord
Felton Burns VFW Post 5260 of Springville
Amvets Post 219 of Boston
Concord Veteran Care Project of Springville
This discussion provides a powerful opportunity for our students to hear firsthand about the sacrifices veterans have made, their perspectives on Veterans Day, the challenges many face today, and the importance of honoring those who serve.
This day is always a special one for our students and staff — a day filled with respect, learning, and gratitude. We are proud to continue this growing tradition and look forward to another meaningful celebration of our community’s veterans.
Respectfully,
Dr. Fisher

Spooky Fun for Halloween at SMS
Water Balloon Launch
Mr. Reese's seventh-grade science classes recently engaged in the "Measuring with a Purpose" lesson, which added some friendly competition, as well as a slingshot and water balloons, to the learning experience of how to properly measure. The students had to use a triple-beam balance to very accurately measure the water balloons. They measured the distance that their water balloons traveled and received points for hitting a target. Points count toward extra credit, and the winners will receive a prize.
Trip to Old Fort Niagara
Seventh graders had the opportunity to step back in time for an immerrsive experience at Old Fort Niagara! During the field trip, they toured the fort, hearing re-enactors speak about weaponry, trading, military tactics, fort life, and even got to try on some historical garb!
Reward for Character
The Middle School Character Ed program started off with a sweet treat this school year! Students who showed the trait Respect earned a ticket and a chance to win the monthly reward. Those who won walked to the Springville Dairy for ice cream! Who doesn't love ice cream for breakfast?
Big Apple Crunch Day
Speedball Under the Lights
Grades 2-8 came out Tuesday night to show off their speed, agility, throwing, catching, and most importantly - sportsmanship! Three fields of nonstop energy, smiles, and competition made for an awesome night. Thank you to all the volunteers for running it and the parents for bringing everyone out. Go Griffs!
Modified Sports Update
Modified Football:
Springville boys modified football capped off their season with a 33–6 win over an impressive Kenmore West team, finishing with a 6–1 record. Despite tough weather conditions, the offense once again powered forward with over 300 yards of total offense, while the defense continued its dominance and not allowing a single first down in the first half. A special shout-out to all the classmates and fans who came out in the rain to cheer on the team, and to the teachers and school staff for lifting these boys up every day. And of course, a huge thank you to the parents, the team behind the team, for their constant support. This season, we learned a little about football and a lot about life. Go Griff’s!
Modified Girls' Soccer:
The girls' modified soccer team finished their season on a 7-game winning streak by beating Eden 2-0 on Monday. Goals were scored by Jeana Collins and Jordan Merchant. Autumn Gamel and Tia Lemanski locked down the center of the field. Goalies Nikita Eckam and Arizona Bartlett got shutouts in 5 of their last 6 games. The Lady Griffs finished the season with an 8-2 record, beating every team in their division.
