Orrington Elementary School
August 15th, 2023
Week of December 2nd, 2024
Cold Weather
With cold weather here now, please make sure your children are appropriately dressed with a coat, gloves, and other winter gear. If you are in need of any of these items, please reach out to Dr. Schoeffmann and Ms. Yoo.
The cut off for outdoor recess is a real feel of 20 degrees or below. We monitor the weather each day before recess to make a decision within 15-30 minutes of recess.
As a note, Orrington is an older building, and occasionally there are parts of the building that run cooler than the rest of the building. It is an ideal goal to keep the building uniformly heated, but it can take time for the building to heat up. If you can send your children with an extra sweater to wear, that would be helpful!
For more information about emergency closings, you can find it HERE on the district website.
Attendance
Reminder of attendance reporting and procedures
Regular school attendance is essential for student success. When students are present and engaged in their learning, they are more likely to stay on track, remain motivated, and reach their full academic potential. That's why District 65 has set an attendance goal of 95% or better for each of our schools.
We understand that life can present unexpected challenges, but the importance of students attending school regularly and on time cannot be overstated. Excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused, can significantly impact a child's educational progress.
If your child needs to miss school, please call your child’s school to report the absence by 10 a.m. Learn more about D65 attendance reporting and procedures
Spirit Week
Author Visit
Yesterday, the kindergartners and first graders had an author visit from Jacob Grant! He read two of his stories and even taught the students how to draw their own penguin. (The drawings turned out super cute!)
Jacob Grant is a winner of the prestigious 2024 Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustration Exhibition (for his art in his newest book, Umami), and he’s also an okay kids soccer coach for his own children's teams. Jacob is originally from Cincinnati, and now lives with his wife and two little ones near Chicago. Here he can be found in his home studio, drawing and writing until something feels story-ish.
Happenings in the Classrooms
Kindergarten completed their Wit and Wisdom Unit 1 on The 5 Senses before Fall Break. The classes came together to do an engaging smell experience!
There were essential oil smells on different cotton balls. The kinders went around to each table and smell the bottles that had the cotton ball, and then determine which items they were smelling! Scents included lime, cinnamon, and orange.
Thank you Ms. Jones & Ms. Mangurten for capping off the unit with a group activity!
School Picture Retakes
Picture Retake Day is Thursday, December 12th from 9 - 10 am. for any student who was absent on picture day (October 29, 2024) or who did not like their photo. Students will be called down by grade level. Please ensure that your child or your child’s teacher knows that they will have a retake.
Please see the attached flyer for ordering instructions or visit mylifetouch.com and enter the Picture Day ID EVTP9QTF4.
If your child is having their picture retaken because you were not satisfied with their original picture, please return your original photo package to school with your child so that they can return it to the photographer.

E-Learning Preparation
As we prepare for the start of the e-learning season (though fingers crossed we won't need to!), we want to ensure you are well-equipped to support your child's successful online learning. 3rd through 5th grade students will begin bringing home devices daily during this time with their QR codes, while kindergarten through second grade students will bring their devices during breaks and any foreseeable weather conditions.
If an e-learning day is called, we will send out an email with a master list of Zoom links, and Dr. Schoeffmann and Ms. Yoo will be available to troubleshoot any issues. Students will follow their schedule from 9:05AM to 11:35AM with Zoom sessions with their educators before switching to asynchronous work for the remainder of the school day.
Student expectations are as follows:
Students are expected to join the synchronous learning sessions and complete the synchronous and asynchronous work during an emergency day.
If a student cannot attend the synchronous learning window, they are to notify their classroom teacher, who will provide an additional learning option to ensure that the student receives the 5 hours of learning required.
Students are expected to use the links provided in order to complete the items that are assigned.
Students should utilize platforms to ask questions and communicate with staff.
It is expected that students keep interactions online positive and constructive.
Educators will monitor platforms and email and work to respond to student requests in a timely manner.
If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to the Orrington administration team or your child's teacher.
