Sister Rosemary Remembrance
The Hubbs Community was deeply saddened this week by the loss of Sister Rosemary, a kind person who ‘left a loving and important mark on this world.’ She was a truly dedicated educator, having taught for 60 years. We were lucky to have her here at the Hubbs Center for 24 of those years. We were impressed by her ‘energy and amazingly positive attitude’ towards teaching, her students, coworkers, and towards battling cancer, twice. She never complained and ‘always had a nice word to say to everyone.’ Sister Rosemary set an example of how to ‘live her life in hope and joy and wanted to share that with others.’
In addition to her years of full time teaching and fulfilling the obligations of being a nun, she volunteered with prisoners and numerous refugee projects over the years. Sister Rosemary also really loved to spend her time square dancing, which she continued to do for as long as she could. Although square dancing was her favorite type of dancing, she was known to break into the chicken dance to liven up a boring class. Beloved by her students and co-workers alike, she was a ‘sunshine to so many.’
We weren’t the only ones impressed by Sister Rosemary. Remember, this story from the Pioneer Press?

Marilyn Gjerde receives Excellence in Volunteer Management Award
Contratulations to Marilyn Gjerde for receiving the Excellence in Volunteer Management Award at Literacy Minnesota's Virtual Volunteer Management Conference on December 3.
She understands that incorporating people from the outside gives our learners opportunity for authentic language practice while making a connection to the community beyond the classroom.
One annual activity that she, her students and volunteers look forward to, is the learner writings for submitting to be published in An Anthology of Adult Student Writing, Journeys and participating in the reading event. She, along with the help of volunteers, works tirelessly, coaching students to prep their writings and complete the submission process. Her classes have attended many Journeys Reading events and her volunteers have been invited to attend with class. In the last few years, they have participated in the virtual events. This has helped our program connect with the larger literacy community, as well as help the individuals involved, connect with others, while being recognized as they read their own stories.
Marilyn is a true leader, encourager, welcomer, includer, and genuine pleasant person to be around and work with. She helps make working, learning and volunteering at the Hubbs Center a beautiful experience.
Thank you, for your service and support of our volunteers, Marilyn!
Meet Hubbs Staff!
This past week, we got to interview teacher Jolee Mosher! Here is a spotlight of her and what she does at Hubbs!
What is your position at Hubbs?
~Teacher
How long have you worked at Hubbs?
~I have been with Hubbs Center for a long period of time. I started teaching at an Adult Basic Education program at Como High in the early 1990's. Yes, I am old. Many of the students who attend Hubbs Center were not even born when I started teaching.
What do you teach at Hubbs?
~This is the first school year to be a daytime teacher at Hubbs Center which is exciting. This year I teach both my classes online - ELL A and Academic Speaking and Listening. In the past I was part of a partnership with Hubbs Center/ABE and Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) called Family Literacy. Parents with young children ages 0-5 would attend school three days a week for 2.5 hours. Parents would learn English with a Hubbs ELL Teacher while their children attended an age-appropriate early childhood classroom. I have also taught classes at worksites, done job training courses, guided students get their GED or HS Diploma. I like variety in life.
Do you have a favorite class to teach?
~There is never a favorite class to teach because it is the students/learners who attend the classes that make the classes interesting and engaging. I do miss the Family Literacy classes this year because I don't see and interact with the little kids and the parents.
~Outside of Hubbs Center I enjoy going to the Minnehaha Dog Park with my dog. The park has 6.6 acres for dogs to run along the Mississippi River, play in the river, jump over downed trees and climb up the steep inclines. I also find joy in playing games, cribbage and backgammon are my favorites. I like to watch Jeopardy if I can find the time.
~My advice to students is to have goals with mini goals built within. Reaching a goal is important and energizing.

FAIR Community Ambassadors
Prepare + Prosper’s (P+P) FAIR program is excited to announce the launch of FAIR Community Ambassadors!
FAIR is a partnership with Sunrise Banks, N.A., Member FDIC. Our goal is to provide access to banking products and solutions to communities who have been shut out, mistrust, or lack access to mainstream banking. FAIR gives people predictable fees, no overdraft, control over their money, and a way to build credit. We’ve launched a new way for the people to connect with FAIR: FAIR Community Ambassadors!
We hired four FAIR customers as ambassadors who will promote FAIR in their own communities, networks, and expand reach with our community partners. Shaquonna, Jeremy, Ebony, and Trenece will all work with FAIR for a year and help ensure that customers have a strong voice in shaping how FAIR expands and functions. Ambassadors will be in the community at events promoting FAIR, directly enrolling customers in bank and credit building accounts, and consistently meeting with P+P staff to provide feedback and help shape the direction and implementation of FAIR.
Libraries: Catch the FAIR Community Ambassadors in your local library!
FAIR is working with Saint Paul Public Libraries and Hennepin County Libraries to bring FAIR to the community in a new way and we need your help promoting this initiative!
FAIR Community Ambassadors will be working out of 5 libraries each month, making the accounts (checking, savings, credit builder) accessible to the public in their neighborhoods. Ambassadors will be at Sun Ray and Arlington Hills in Saint Paul and North Regional, Brookdale, and Franklin libraires in Hennepin Country, each month.
You can see the full events and details on our website here: https://fairfinancial.org/events/
