A letter from our leader Janice A letter from our leader Janice

The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali

Recently, I heard someone say “time decay” and I immediately thought of Dali and his art works. Time does seem to decay. We would all like more time. We make time. We save time. We watch time pass by. We spend time. Time seems to stretch and shrink depending on what we are doing. Time flies when we are having fun. It stands still when we are completing boring tasks.

Clarissa Pinkola Estes said, “A woman must be careful to not allow over-responsibility (or over-respectability) to steal her necessary creative rests, riffs, and rapture. She simply must put her foot down and say no to half of what she believes she should be doing. Art is not meant to be created in stolen moments only.” Clarissa is giving us permission to play.

At our Bee meeting in March I will be traveling. Geri will be the leader for the March meeting. Thank you Geri! She will lead a critique session. Be prepared to bring an example for discussion. There will be show and tell. Bev and Gini will have an update on our Opportunity Quilt. Melinda will talk about our Retreat at the Lakemont Fire Station in April. Bring your sewing, lunch and ideas. Plan to stay awhile and play. Enjoy your time together.

Keep pedaling, Janice

Before the March Meeting

Geri would like for everyone to read the two documents before the meeting on March 12:

https://www.janedunnewold.com/resources/critiques

One is a checklist that can be used as a guideline when looking at a quilt - this is published on her website as part of her creative strength training class.

The second is a detailed essay she wrote concerning the process.

I hope that these documents will help the Bee Artful group conduct critique sessions that are productive.

Since we’re all at various levels when it comes to hand stitching, learn, refresh or improve your hand embroidery skills with tips and techniques from Bee members. Some of the experienced stitchers in Bee Artful are ready to share! Each month you can come with a sampler of some kind (cloth, hoop, needles, floss, and/or Perle cotton (see photo for a sampler idea) and learn some new stitches. In March Silke will demonstrate her pistel stitch and Melinda will demonstrate scroll stitch.

Letter from the editor Letter from the editor

Greetings from Alaska!

I am including just a few of the many snow covered mountains and vistas from Alaska. It is truly a magnificent place and I am glad we came in winter. It does not feel as cold as you might think but we also made sure to bring the right clothes (and boots!). Just as a point of reference: being above or below freezing is not a thing. It is whether the temps are above or below 0 F. Today is is 24 for a high but tomorrow will be 11. Night time is going to dip close to or slightly below 0.

I am happy to convey all of these wonderful "goings on" via this newsletter. Try to get things to me in advance of the end of the month via email (mandmoliver@gmail.com) or text. If you put the word "newsletter" somewhere in the message line I will be able to find it easier (if using email). See you soon.

Melinda

Matanuska glacier where we did a hike that we did not realize we had signed up for! The weather for this first full day is rare as we have found out!
