How Do We Return?
Luke 2:15-20
Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17
The shepherds were privileged to be a part of that first Christmas. They heard the angelic message proclaiming the birth of the Messiah and were evidently among the first to worship in Jesus's presence. What joy must have filled their hearts! How excited they must have been! Eventually, however, they had to return to the fields. The coming of the Messiah did not negate the need for shepherds to care for the flocks. But the important thing is how they returned. They did not go back in sadness and dejection because the great event was over and now they had to return to the routine of their daily work period instead, they returned, glorifying and praising God.
Once again this year, Christmas is past for us, and we too must return - to our job, our school, our housework. How do we return? Is it with a sense of sadness and dread because we have to encounter the same routine, the same people, the same problems? Or are we able to return with a renewed joy and vigor in our lives for having been reminded once again of God's great love and great gift?
Let us pray: Dear God, help us to thank You, praise You, and glorify You in the midst of our daily lives. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Thought for the day: Am I glorifying God by my attitudes?

GroundWorks Connect Reflects
This time of year always causes people to stop and reflect. We reflect on what has gone right, what has not, and the growth that we've experienced over the last twelve months.
GroundWorks Connect has experienced significant growth in many areas. Our staff has grown, our reach has grown across the state and the opportunities have grown! What a blessing it has been to experience this type of growth just in twelve months.
Reflecting also brings about the people we have experienced life events with. Again, GroundWorks is blessed because we have been able to experience all of this growth with YOU Wesley. It is such a joy to share all of this with you inside and outside of the office space. We are grateful for all of the volunteers coming to garden builds, different events when we partner with schools, and whenever we call for help- be it stuffing envelopes or filling Halloween treat bags.
Last, but not least, reflection brings us to thinking how things will be moving forward and into a season of hope. Hope is something we all need and cling to in our lives in some capacity or another. Hope brings groups of people together to accomplish amazing things. So far, we have brought hope to many communities together. We are looking forward to building hope in communities all across the state together. Our reach is becoming more significant all the time!
Let's keep growing hope- together!

Remembering Your Baptism
On Sunday, January 11, we will offer reaffirmation of your baptism as we also celebrate the Baptism of our Lord. You will be given the opportunity to come forward with others and reaffirm your baptism - to remember, to recommit your lives to serving God. If you have not been baptized, you may still come forward and receive a blessing. And if you are interested in being baptized, let's get that done - let's talk!
Time for Fellowship
Sunday, January 11, following worship - we will share together in a potluck down in fellowship hall. Please join us and bring a dish to share!

Lirio de los Valles-Meets in our former nursery room on Sundays 12:00-2:00 and Thursdays 7:00-8:30
Experts warn of public health danger from ultra-processed foods
Ultra-processed foods are a major public health threat that must be addressed, according to a new series of papers authored by 43 global experts in the Lancet medical journal.
The scientists, including the Brazilian professor who coined the term with colleagues around 15 years ago, argue that ultra-processed foods are now increasingly common worldwide and linked to a decline in diet quality and a number of diseases, from obesity to cancer.
'It’s about the evidence we have today about ... ultra-processed foods and human health,' Carlos Monteiro, professor at the University of Sao Paulo, said at an online briefing on Nov.18. 'What we know right now justifies global public action.'
Ultra-processed foods are a class of food or drink made using processing techniques, additives and industrial ingredients, and mostly containing little whole foods. Examples include carbonated soft drinks or instant noodles. While the term has been used widely in recent years, some scientists, and the food industry, argue it is too simple, and the fight has become increasingly politicized.
The authors acknowledge criticisms in the Lancet series, saying more evidence is needed, particularly on why and how ultra-processed foods cause ill health, as well as on products with different nutritional values within the ultra-processed food class. But they say the signal is already strong enough for governments to take action.
In a systematic review of 104 long-term studies done for the series, 92 reported greater associated risks with one or more chronic diseases linked to ultra-processed food dietary patterns, and significant associations for 12 health conditions including Type 2 diabetes, obesity and depression.
It is always better to center our diets around fresh foods. I always make sure I wash/sanitize fresh produce when I bring it home by soaking the produce briefly in a vinegar and water solution then letting them air dry. I believe that helps neutralize most of the pathogens that might exist on the surface of the fruits or vegetables. There are also commercial products that you can buy to accomplish the same purpose. I use white vinegar because it is readily available and cheap.

Wesley Neighborhood Outreach News
The Wesley Neighborhood Outreach team has voted to promote the collection of warm winter wear for the next few months. This includes warm socks, long underwear (especially for men), gloves/mittens, hats, coats and whatever you have to donate that will promote the feeling of being loved and cared about. The items need not be new but should be clean and mended. These items will be gifted to the visitors to the Nightwatch Canteen. A collection station will be located in the Narthex of the church.
We will be serving Nightwatch Canteen the 1st Sunday in January. Please see the list in the Narthex if you are interested in donating.
PRAYERS OF HOPE FOR A VISION AT WESLEY UMC
Scripture says a lot about praying. I’ve always said you can never have too many prayers. Better to have too many than none at all! But when you pray, be open to God’s voice and nudges.
1 John 5:14 - We are certain God will hear our prayers when we ask for what pleases Him.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-17 - Always be joyful and never stop praying.
Philippians 4:6 - Don't worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts
offer up your prayers and requests to God.
James 4:3 - Yet even when you do pray, your prayers are not answered, because you pray just
for selfish reasons.
We can get weary from waiting on God. Don’t lose heart. God is using this time to help us grow in character and maturity. He will use this time of waiting for our good and His glory. Without the work that is taking place in our hearts today, we won’t have the character we need to step into our dreams when the time is right.
We really could use your input! The Administrative Council will be meeting in January and part of their time will be brainstorming about what we envision for Wesley UMC in the future. We need your help. Please be praying about where God will lead Wesley UMC in 2026 and beyond. So I ask you: where do you see God working in this church and congregation and community?
Also in this newsletter, you will find a cut-out questionnaire (if you will) where you may give us your input. You may sign your name or not – your choice. You may cut it out and send it to the church, email it to the church (wumc1700@outlook.com), drop it off at the church, or place it in the offering plate on a Sunday morning worship time. It would be great to have your ideas by the end of the year. This church exists because of you and your love of God and wanting to be in service to God. We have so much more to do here! So let’s be faithful disciples because God is faithful to keep HIS promises. When we pray, we can find peace in knowing that God will answer our prayers (maybe not exactly in the way we prayed for them or in our time, but with God, all things are possible).
