President's Message

To Think Critically is to Steer Decision Making

Whether online, in the classroom, in meetings, or as a consumer of news media, we are vulnerable to persuasion that tries to alter our thinking, sway our beliefs, and direct our decisions. Some of these persuasive tactics may be partially true or they promote useful ideas, but others, not. The only way to tell what is worth believing and what is not is to think logically about the ideas being “sold.” That means consider your source. That is thinking critically.

If the speaker/writer makes generalizations or gives opinions with evidence to support them that can be substantiated, it’s likely that the ideas are reliable. If no supporting evidence is offered, forget those opinions/generalizations.

If facts offered can be verified by two or three other sources, the likelihood of the information being reliable is good. The effort of research rests with you.

If one’s common sense suggests there is something suspicious abut the idea being “sold,” don’t buy it. If you are still enticed, do your research to relieve your doubts, then make a decision.

Delta Kappa Gamma International is composed of women educators who think logically. See our Purposes #4, #6, and #7. But to think critically is a more crucial way of thinking, for it takes time and effort to carry it off. The payoff is that it allows one to steer and not be blindly led through decision making. Let’s think more about using the mind we have and steering our own course.

From your Co-Presidents, Dr. Melissa Blalock and Kay Moss

Member News

Lisa Ferguson had her thyroid removed recently. She is suffering due to her body's traumatic reaction which began over the weekend. She just got a prescription last Monday night so she is still very sick. We need to support her with calls and cards since she is always doing the same for us.

Amber Roberts has lost her dad after being on hospice for some time. Please reach out to her as well.

Ginny Bowers has been the victim of a storm of maladies. She is in treatment for leukemia, for arrhythmia, and for a sudden occurrence of deafness. She is coping as well as she can. She has lots of family and church support, but she felt remiss about not getting in touch with us. She is isolated at home, so please let her know we care.

Chapter Activities

The Silent Auction which benefits our project with the Family Resource Center will need a new leader as Leah Bailey has committed to working with her church in efforts that demand more time. We appreciate her exemplary service in the past auctions and look forward to her continuing membership with us.

Lauren Wilmoth is hoping we will acknowledge two local coffee shops. Calamity Coffee and Buds Coffee both donated several gift cards for our new teachers. She has sent them thank you cards, but thought it might be good for our members to know about and uplift these two great local businesses.
