Undokai!

Our teachers and PTA want to say thank you to all our wonderful volunteers that helped Undokai run smoothly and successfully for all of our students. The nurses, photographers, and tent helpers were all awesome!! To the families that provided tents, ice bags, water cups, and hachimaki washing - A BIG THANK YOU!! Thank you to Horiba Sensei for organizing this event and Yoko Kawamoto for organizing the PTA component and working so hard to make new bean bags along with volunteers.

We are so appreciative that this Japanese tradition returned to our campus thanks to the teachers. It’s such a valuable component of our student’s development of cultural competence across the language programs.

Special Acknowledgements to:

Thank you to Junko, Maya, Michiko, Shihomi, Miyuki for sewing so many replacement bean bags that the kids loved throwing.

El Comité Herencia Cultural

A big thank you to Hilda Ordaz and Noemi Barajas for organizing such a wonderful Día de Muertos altar experience for all the students. All the students had the opportunity to create a craft related to the important elements of the altar and to learn about those elements as they got to visit and walk through the altar with their classrooms. Thanks so much for making this happen along with many volunteers for our students and families as they had the opportunity to visit the Fall Festival Día de Muertos altar as families and share in some pan de muerto and aguas frescas.

Special Acknowledgments to:

Alex Cobian Alvarado - thank you for always providing your support.

Julie Alvarez - thank you for donating the wonderful pan de muerto from Panamericana Bakery. Ariana Sanchez- thank you for donating aguas frescas.

Edy Mendoza-Alva, thank you very much for donating the cempasúchils every year and for donating conchas for the sale.

Rosalinda Rodriguez Silva - thank you for the paper flowers.

Thank you CHC members who came out to help - Nicket Mendez, Vanessa Maksymenko, Claudia Fajardo, Julie Alvarez, Bianca Enriquez-Lopez, Edy Mendoza-Alva.

Native American Heritage Month

This month we recognize and celebrate Native American culture and history. We can all learn about Native American tribes right there locally in Culver City and Los Angeles. A great place to visit as a family are the La Ballona Wetlands were you can learn about the Tongva people. Some of our students visited this site as a field trip and it would be so great to make a school to home connection. Another place to visit just 15-20 mins away is the Kuruvungna Sacred Springs in Santa Monica. This is a small site located on the University High school grounds and you can visit on Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm.

Native American Heritage is also a time to celebrate the indigenous peoples across the Americas and PTA hopes to bring an assembly to the students were they can learn a little about the indigenous peoples from Mexico, Central America, and South America through music, instruments, and story-telling.
