Do you know...

...crickets "hear" with their ears?? Crickets indeed "hear" with their legs, specifically via the tympanal organs located on their front legs just below the "knees" (the tibiae).

Here is the breakdown of why and how they do it:

  • Leg Ears (Tympana): Both male and female crickets have these small, oval-shaped membranes that act as eardrums.
  • Vibration Sensors: Because their "ears" are on their legs, they are incredibly sensitive to ground vibrations, making it very hard to sneak up on them.
  • "Listening" Behavior: When a cricket adjusts its legs, it is often maneuvering to better detect the direction of sound, often to find a mate or avoid predators.

Crickets are notorious for being hard to find because, in addition to this, their chirping speed is directly tied to the temperature, often enabling them to stop or change their tune if a predator (or person) approaches!

Pick Up and Drop Off Changes

Due to the construction going on at the High School, we will need to adjust the bus and parent pickup and drop off procedures, which will start Monday, April 27th, and go through the rest of the school year. Parents will be dropping off and picking up in the high school parking lot. This will create a lot of additional traffic in our parking lot so students will need to be extra attentive to cars and pedestrians.

Remember, we have many students and staff who will be coming in and out of these doors, so you must watch for pedestrians and drive slowly through the parking lot!

Ripon Area Community Theater Holding "Annie" Auditions!

Leapin’ lizards, the Ripon Area Community Theatre (RACT) will be holding open auditions for their summer musical production of "Annie," May 29-31!

Actors should prepare approximately 2 minutes of a vocal audition (a song) that they will perform at the start of the auditions. Actors should bring a backing track (the background music, with no vocals - think karaoke) that can be played on their own device during the auditions.

Actors should choose songs suitable for musical theatre, rather than contemporary songs like you'd hear on the radio; and the song selection should be one that highlight's the actor's voice. The vocal director will also have each actor sing scales to determine their vocal range.

Once all vocal auditions are complete, the stage director will have actors deliver scene readings from the musical, placing everyone in small groups and assigning each of them a character from that scene. They'll have a chance to review the scenes briefly before performing them, but the scenes do not need to be memorized before being read in front of the directors and other auditioners. There will be several rounds of scene readings, with actors having the chance to read multiple characters in different scenes and with different people. The director will do their best to give each actor the opportunity to read for a specific character they want to be considered for at least once, time permitting.

Actors should try to arrive as close to the start of the audition times as possible, to better ensure they are able to perform their vocal audition and do scene readings alongside the other actors.

Walk-ins are welcome. Actors may sign-up in advance for the specific audition date they plan on attending.

Questions about auditions for the RACT production of "Annie" can be sent to: riponareacommunitytheatre@gmail.com

The Ripon Area Community Theatre is a sponsored program of the Ripon Noon Kiwanis.
"Annie" is licensed by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
