The Cannon Connection
2024-2025 Newsletter for Cannon Elementary Families
September 15-21, 2024
Good morning Cannon families,
Let me start by giving our parents a HUGE THANK YOU for all the paper donations! Your overwhelming support and generosity for our school community is outstanding. Your support means the world to us! Without it, we would not be able to have the impact we do on our school community – thank you!
Congratulations to our 4th and 5th grade STEM Habit of Mind Hall of Fame Inductees for Applying Past Knowledge! We are PROUD to honor our scholars for exhibiting STEM thinking, and we can't wait to celebrate our next group of inductees this Friday.
Please also help me celebrate our first two STEMtastic Staff Superstar Spotlights - Ms. Shedd and Ms. Rios! Our first two recipients are excellent examples of Cannon team members who SHOW UP AND STEP UP each day with BIG SMILES! Their positive, can-do attitudes are contagious!
Three Facts About the VATRE
GCISD registered voters will be asked to consider adding three cents to the Maintenance & Operations tax rate through a voter-approved tax ratification election on the November 5 ballot. Here are three quick facts:
Even with the VATRE, GCISD’s total tax rate will be lower - Even with the three additional pennies from the passage of the VATRE, the GCISD total overall tax rate (M&O plus I&S) will be lowered by $0.0014.
Funds are not subject to recapture - Tax funds collected through these additional three pennies would stay within GCISD and not be subject to recapture, meaning that 100 percent of these funds would remain in the district.
The three-cent increase to the Maintenance and Operations (M&O) tax rate would generate approximately $6 million - These funds would be for school district operations, which includes instruction, staff, transportation, maintenance, extracurricular activities and other daily operating expenses, excluding projects included in the recent bond. Bonds are paid for by a separate Interest & Sinking (I&S) fund, which is debt service.

GCISD Hosting Facebook Live about the VATRE
GCISD is hosting a virtual information session about the voter-approved tax ratification election (VATRE). Join the session to hear details about the VATRE, its impact to GCISD and tax rate information. The session will be streamed via Facebook Live at 5 p.m., Wednesday, September 18, on the GCISD Facebook page. ‘See’ you there!
Just a quick reminder to please label jackets, water bottles, and lunch boxes; Our lost and found is starting to collect your missing items. Also, Monday, September 23 is a GCISD Staff Professional Development Day - No School for Students!
As always, thank you for your parent partnership!
Proud to be your principal,
Dr. Tina Garrett

We NEED your Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Support!
Did you know that many employers will match a donation you have given to a qualifying nonprofit organization such as Cannon PTA?
Check with your employer’s Human Resources (HR) manager and ask if your donation can be matched. Each company that participates has their own guidelines and processes and we are happy to provide any information you need to qualify for matching.
