Dear Coupeville School District Families and the Community,

As we approach the end of a successful school year, I want to take a moment to wish all of our families, students, and staff a wonderful and restful summer break. This time of renewal gives us the opportunity to reflect on our achievements and look ahead to the exciting developments planned for the upcoming school year.

Expanding Opportunities for Our Students

I am thrilled to share that despite financial challenges facing many school districts, Coupeville School District will continue to grow and expand our educational offerings. Through careful fiscal planning and strategic resource allocation, we are adding meaningful programs that directly respond to student interests and prepare them for future success.

New Career Technical Education (CTE), Arts and STEM Opportunities:

  • Choir will be offered as an elective at both our middle and high school levels
  • Robotics (CTE) is launching at the middle school, with potential expansion to the high school as we assess interest and resources
  • Technical Foundations (CTE) is an introduction to construction and welding

Career Technical Education (CTE) Expansion: Our CTE program will feature several new courses designed to provide hands-on learning experiences:

  • Medical Detectives
  • Technical Foundations
  • Construction
  • Diesel Technology
  • Family Health
  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Sports Medicine
  • Agriculture

These additions align directly with our strategic plan and are supported by extensive educational research. Studies consistently show that diverse elective and CTE offerings increase student engagement, improve attendance rates, and provide crucial pathways for post-secondary success.

I want to address concerns I've heard from some families about program availability. Rather than cutting programs, we are strategically expanding our offerings while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Every decision we make is guided by our commitment to providing excellent educational opportunities within our means and in direct response to student input.

We understand that some families may be considering other districts, and while we respect every family's right to choose what's best for their children, I want to ensure our community understands the positive direction we're heading. Our approach prioritizes sustainability and growth over quick fixes that could jeopardize long-term program stability.

As we continue to assess community interest and available resources, we remain committed to exploring additional opportunities. Music education, including band, remains an area of interest for potential future development as we work to build comprehensive programming that serves all students.

The expansion of these programs represents our commitment to preparing Coupeville students for success in high school and beyond. Each offering has been carefully selected to provide pathways that align with both student interests and workforce demands in our region and beyond.

I encourage families to engage with us as we continue planning for the future. Your input helps shape our priorities and ensures we're meeting the evolving needs of our students and community.

Thank you for your continued support of Coupeville School District. Together, we are building an educational environment that challenges, inspires, and prepares our students for whatever path they choose to pursue.

Wishing you all a safe and wonderful summer,

Shannon Leatherwood
