Cornwall School News

Message from the Principal
Some mornings, the headlines weigh heavy on me as I get ready to greet our students. Today was one such morning. Cornwall staff started the day by being together briefly, with a moment of silence for the school community in Oregon that is experiencing a devasting tragedy. In these times, I try to focus on what I have control over: ensuring that each and every member of our school community feels seen, heard, and valued. I focus on the love I can give to kids, staff and families.
As far as I know, the news did not come up at school and I'm so grateful, but staff were ready if it did. If it's helpful, this is a resource I often reference when children ask questions about events that are terrible: Talking with Children about Violence: Tips for Parents and Educators.
If you're struggling with how to respond to something your child has seen, heard, or asked, feel free to reach out.
With love,
Nadya

Reminders and Useful Bits
Dressing for the weather
It's Vermont and we have all the weather!
- Students are outside at arrival. Please make they are dressed for the weather at drop off.
- If it is drizzling, we are still outside.
- All students need a set of dry clothes in their backpacks.
Snack
- Students can eat school breakfast and lunch at no cost every day.
- Families are responsible for packing a snack daily. Please help your student remember. Our extra snack supplies are quite limited (and not very exciting).
Expectations on the bus
Please help us to remind your bus rider:
- stay seated and buckled
- face forward
- talk to the people in the seats next to you
- keep backpacks closed
Elementary students are not allowed to use phones on the bus.
Snapshots
4th Grade
4th graders have been working on the transdisciplinary theme of “How We Organize Ourselves." The central idea of the theme is that democracy is sustainable through active participation; it is an inquiry into systems, structures, and networks. The central idea connects the following lines of inquiry:
the benefits and challenges in a democracy;
responsible participation and citizenship;
people make rules to create responsibilities, protect freedoms, and keep each other safe.
In literacy, students are learning to write opinion pieces. 4th graders will focus on establishing a point of view and then supporting the point of view with facts, details, and also using a well planned introduction and conclusion. And in math, students reviewed the relationship between dimensions and area. They used their base ten number pieces as referents for centimeters and decimeters as they created rectangular arrays, identified and labeled dimensions, and found areas. Students worked through an investigation in which they figured out the dimensions of a sticker advertising a fictitious recreational center. After that, students designed and drew a sticker for the Cornwall Outdoor Recreation Area (CORA).
In one of the playful moments, 4th graders played a class favorite, Poison Dart Frog, which includes problem solving skills, self control, and also acting!!
