Celebrating CTE Month
February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) month, a time to celebrate the value of CTE and the success of programs shaping students across the country! With a wide variety of career and technical courses available, the OHM BOCES Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) provides students with hands-on learning, real-world skills and pathways to exciting careers, setting them up for success in both college and the workforce.
CTE Students Continue Tradition of Giving with Feed Our Vets Donation
Students from the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison (OHM) BOCES Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) are making a difference through community service. On December 5, Feed Our Vets visited the OHM BOCES CTEC to pick up 1,704 non-perishable food items, bringing their total donation to 2,429 food items this year.
The non-perishable food donations are part of an annual fundraising and food drive effort organized by the OHM BOCES chapter of SkillsUSA, a national organization dedicated to fostering leadership, teamwork and community service among CTE students.
The non-perishable food donations are the result of the SkillsUSA Area 2 Conference community service project, which the OHM BOCES chapter contributed to with a local fundraiser. The OHM BOCES Criminal Justice class donated the most non-perishable food items.
Feed Our Vets is a vital organization that supports veterans, their spouses and children who face food insecurity. All items collected by CTE students will directly benefit the Utica-area Feed Our Vets organization, helping veterans and their families within the community.
The OHM BOCES chapter of SkillsUSA, under the guidance of advisors John Stratton and Kimberly Petronella, is proud to continue this meaningful tradition of giving back to those who have served. This effort highlights the power of student leadership and the impact of working together to support those in need.

CTE & P-TECH OHM Attend UAS Career Awareness Presentation
On February 7, students in OHM BOCES CTE and P-TECH programs attended an insightful presentation by the Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research Alliance, Inc. (NUAIR) and its partners from the New York State Thruway Authority at the Howard D. Mettelman Learning Center.
NUAIR, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing aviation technology through innovations such as Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), introduced students to exciting career opportunities in the drone industry. The presentation explored career paths related to programming offered in P-TECH and CTE courses at the OHM BOCES.
Beyond exploring career possibilities, students gained a deeper understanding of emerging technologies and their impact across industries. They also observed live drone demonstrations, while learning about different types of drones and their real-world applications.
To cap off the experience, students had their group photo taken from a flying drone, leaving them with a memorable glimpse into the future of innovation.
A special thank you to NUAIR and the NYS Thruway Authority for providing such an insightful and inspiring experience!
Criminal Justice Students Learn Life - Saving EMS Skills
On February 13, members of the Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Corps (COCVAC) visited the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison (OHM) BOCES main campus to assist second-year students in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Criminal Justice program with patient lifting and moving techniques.
As part of their training in the New York State Basic EMT curriculum, the students gained valuable hands-on experience in ambulance operations. COCVAC Paramedic Ben Louch and EMT Chris Chaffee provided a tour of the ambulance’s interior, demonstrating essential EMS equipment including the LUCAS Device, an automated CPR instrument.
OHM BOCES Criminal Justice alums EMT Tori Ambrosi (Class of 2018), EMT Carmen Guardado (Class of 2021) and Nashton Altier (Class of 2022) also returned to assist Instructor Mr. Ames with skill stations.
A special thank you to COCVAC and Mr. Ames for providing this valuable learning opportunity.
New Visions: Communications Internship
Carlee Foote shares her internship experience through the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES New Visions: Communications program. New Visions programs are designed to provide students with a meaningful conclusion to their high school education while facilitating a focused transition to the next phase of their professional journey. Through this program, students can enroll in dual-credit courses in partnership with Mohawk Valley Community College, earning three college English credits at no additional cost. This unique opportunity equips students with valuable skills and experiences, preparing them for future academic and professional success.
The Career and Technical Education Center
The Career and Technical Education Center programs focus on preparing students for employment, careers or post-secondary education through the development of technical and 21st-century skills. Working with state-of-the-art equipment, students apply theory and knowledge to a wide range of real life work assignments in shops and laboratories. In addition to technical skills, students learn critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, positive employment attitudes, job seeking skills, familiarization with related career opportunities and college readiness.
