Head Cheetah Message
Families,
Wow, what a week we’ve had at Memorial! On Monday, we began with Magical Monday in the cafeteria, followed by a fabulous recognition of elementary arts in the evening. More information about both can be found below. On Wednesday, we celebrated the 100th day of school, along with World Read Aloud Day! And if that wasn’t enough… Smart Start’s Memorial Post Office opened on Wednesday as well! Additionally, this week was National School Counselor Appreciation Week; and we sure do appreciate ours! Mrs. Kasporowski, Mrs. Zilora, Mrs. Adams, and Dr. Fresco-Hawes each go above and beyond to support our students and families. Please send them a “thank you” for all they do every day.
As a reminder, the next two weeks will be short for students. There will be a professional learning day for staff on Friday, February 14th; and school will be closed on February 17th and 18th in observance of Presidents’ Day.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Joey & Andrea
Magical Monday
Monday was Magical Monday in the Memorial School Cafe. Kate Casseli, and the entire kitchen staff, did a wonderful job organizing and facilitating the event. Additionally, an exceptional team of volunteers came to help set up beforehand, and freshened up the cafe in between each lunch wave. Our cafeteria looked absolutely beautiful, complete with matching tablecloths and beautiful decorations. Many of our cheetahs wore dazzling ensembles and used their very best manners. It all made for a very pleasant and refined dining experience!
Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) Elementary Arts Recognition
On Monday evening, two of our Cheetahs were honored at the annual CAS Elementary Arts Recognition for their achievement and perseverance in art education. Regan Sheehan and Teddy Bish were treated to an evening of delicious food, magicians, balloon art, caricature drawings, and a drum performance! The event was held at the Aqua Turf Club.
Grade 1 Food Drive
Congratulations to the grade 1 team!! In recognition of the 100th day of school, they set out to collect 100 food items for the EH Food Bank over a three week period of time. Not only did they meet their goal, they SMASHED it! They will be donating 417 items to those in need!!
100th Day of School!
February 5th was the 100th day of school! K-2 classrooms recognized this special day in a variety of ways. Some students dressed like they were 100 years old, others created 100 day projects and snacks. And everyone took advantage of the many ways to incorporate numeracy by counting, grouping, and discussing place value.
World Read Aloud Day
Not only was February 5th the 100th day of school, but it was also World Read Aloud Day! World Read Aloud Day was founded by an organization called LitWorld to “celebrate the power of reading aloud to create community and amplify new stories, and to advocate for literacy as a foundational human right.” Students listened to wonderful read-alouds throughout the day, visited the Cozy Winter Lodge, set up by Mrs. Flannery and Mrs. Skarvelas, and had special visitors. Mrs. Vigue’s class even had a guest reader from England!
The Memorial Post is now OPEN for Business!
Memorial School is proud to announce the opening of the MEMORIAL POST! Students are now able to write letters to their friends at school. The vision of the Memorial Post Office is to use letter writing to promote caring and kindness in our school community. Each week, students may drop off their letters in the mailbox that’s located in the school lobby. Our learners’ letters will then be delivered by Mrs. Gibson's postal workers.
101 Dalmatians
Mrs. Gibson's students turned into Dalmatians for the 101st day of school!

From The Music Room
Hello Memorial Families! Please find your student’s grade level below to see learning expectations for the past month in music.
Classroom Expectations:
Preschool: Students enjoyed pretending to ice skate on paper plates along to music! They also got to explore with rhythm sticks and play along to music.
Kindergarten: This month, our musical comparison words were high and low. These words are often confused with loud and soft, so we do many activities to reinforce the concept. Students were expected to find high and low sounds in various poems, songs, and stories. Favorites included “Mr. Wiggle and Mr. Waggle”, “Grandma’s Glasses”, “See Saw”, and “Goldilocks”. We had fun imitating the characters’ high and low voices!
First Grade: Students learned about a new music word this month - ostinato (a pattern that repeats). Students also started a unit learning how to play xylophones! Our unit focuses on the song “Who’s in the Woods on this Snowy Day”. We are learning to play three different ostinato parts to go with the song, focusing on playing with a group, using proper technique, and making the parts fit the song. Students will explore the bass xylophone, alto xylophones, soprano xylophones, metallophone, and soprano and alto glockenspiels! They are expected to play with the instructed technique and to show appropriate audience behavior.
Second Grade: This month, students reviewed the concept of ostinato (a pattern that repeats), including watching a silly music video about the word! Then, they were expected to use teamwork to complete a composing project, creating an ostinato to “remix” a music class song. They finished by performing their song and ostinato pattern for the class! Creative performances involved a tool on our chromebooks called “Chrome Music Lab”. The other focus this month was on learning our new note on the music staircase - Do! This low note was found in songs like “IPeas Porridge” and “Icka Backa”.
Third Grade: Third graders spent the past month working hard to earn “belts” in recorder karate! Many students are now taking the initiative to learn songs and notes on their own. They have been provided with time to practice and then test when they are ready to try for a new belt! We have also continued to practice identifying notes on the treble clef staff. Students are expected to earn at least their “green belt” by the end of the school year. Starting with level 3, “orange belt”, students will be able to send in videos from home if they would rather do their recorder test that way. For more information, visit the recorder resources page on my music room website.
Please check out the music room website for more information about the music program. Feel free to reach out at any time by emailing smaldonado@easthamptonct.org.

Notes From The Nurse
Please let your building nurse know if your child is diagnosed with any illness (such as strep, flu, pneumonia, covid, mono, pink eye, etc.) as the nurse’s office tracks illnesses. Please be specific when you notify school with any of the symptoms your child is experiencing.
Here are some guidelines that are helpful for families.
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
Mild headache and/or stomachache
Fatigue
Keep your child home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:
Fever (100.4 degrees or higher. May only return to school after 24 hours of no fever WITHOUT fever reducing medications)
Vomiting (Wait 24 hours after last vomit episode to return to school)
Diarrhea (may return to school after 24 hours since last episode)
Chills
General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, and/or muscle aches
Frequent congested, wet, or croupy cough
Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
Please remind your child(ren) about good hygiene habits:
Wash hands frequently
Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth
Cover mouth and nose when sneezing/coughing and then wash hands
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether to bring them to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in school. Please send in a copy of the doctor’s note if they are seen. Thank you in advance for helping to make this year at school as healthy as possible.
Health Concerns
If your child has a new health concern which you would like to speak to the nurse about you can e-mail the school nurse at their email below.
If you have any specific concerns that arise during the school year (such as stitches, concussions, broken bones/fractures, etc.) please send in a doctor’s note with dates, guidelines, and restrictions, so we can all be on the same page and keep your child safe.
Respectfully,
The EHPS Nurses

Safe School Climate
The East Hampton Board of Education and the school community as a whole promote a secure and productive school climate, conducive to teaching and learning that is free from threat, harassment, and any type of bullying behavior. Therefore it shall be the policy of the Board that bullying and/or teen dating violence committed against a student by another student is prohibited. The Board believes that a school environment in which students feel safe, supported, engaged and helpfully challenged is optimal for learning and healthy development. The Board seeks an environment in which students and adults feel socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically safe; an environment that is free of harassment, intimidation, teen dating violence and bullying. Our website provides links to various policies and reporting forms including our Safe School Climate Plan. Hard copies are also available in our main office. If at any point you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to building administration for further assistance.
Attendance Matters
Please note
When considering the number of absences your student has accrued, keep in mind that a student must be present for 195 minutes in order for the day to count! When bringing your student in late, or signing them out early if they have not been in school for a 195 minutes the day will be recorded as an absence.
