FAME Theatre Department News: Thespians & Theatre Courses (Mr. Grosso)

The River Ridge Middle School Drama Department has been hard at work this year, we certainly hit the ground running! We have been working hard on our two one act plays; our thespian competition play All I Really Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play and our hauntingly fun Fall piece Once Upon A Broomstick. Also our 30+ individual events for thespian competition ranging from costume design to improv to large group musical to monologue and more!

Our thespians of troupe 88135 “dunked” on the competition being praised for how professional and collaborative our troupe was being the whole time! We are so proud of all of our thespians and can’t wait to take the majority of our students who participated in Districts to State Festival in January in Orlando! Break a leg!!

Theatre Class News

Our Drama students have also been exploring several theatrical avenues in classes, the breakdown of what we have learned so far is as follows:

We are so proud of our thespians here at RRMS! Stay tuned for more news on future projects including the announcement of our spring musical!

zoom_out_map

Basic Theatre

Basic Theatre- explored the foundations of theatrical performance answering the questions- how do actors act? What is emotional expression? What are stage directions? How do actors prepare for a performance? They have also studied theatre history and created masks alongside our Greek theatre unit (see pictures below). Students most recently wrapped up a unit on musical theatre presenting a full history of the art form accompanied by a short performance and created a technical theatre project complete with set design drawings and costume design renderings. And of course we have had fun with lots of improv in-between!
zoom_out_map

Theatre 1

Theatre 1- expanded on the foundations of theatrical performance taking what Basic Theatre learned above and diving deeper into it. So far the big hit of the semester was out Shakespeare project where students read an excerpt from the masquerade scene in Romeo and Juliet and acted out scenes with masks they created. Theatre 1 is a year-long course and will continue to expand on these ideas which will include playwriting, directing, research into the theatrical job market, and more next semester.

Introduction to Technical Theatre

Introduction to Technical Theatre- has covered several areas of design this semester already we began with set design, props, lighting, and are now we are moving on to costumes and makeup. Students have utilized an exciting play called Caught in the Web that features lots of social media references and memes, to create the designs from above. Students have worked to gain an understanding of visual design principles, technical equipment including lighting instruments, and created their very own designs for all of it! Students even got a private tour of our professional onsite theatre and all of it’s equipment here at River Ridge!
zoom_out_map

Theatre 2

Theatre 2- students in this course have been working non-stop since the beginning of the year preparing themselves for thespian competition. They kicked off the year working with Mr. Grosso to create their own audition packages complete with a dance routine, monologue, and short cut of a musical theatre song. From there students were cast in the thespian one act and other individual events to take to competition. Almost all of their pieces scored superior and competition! Their hard work in class paid off and they learned a lot in the rehearsal process implementing what they had learned in their previous courses.

Visual Arts: 2D and Current Projects (Mrs. Lightbody)

In the exploring 2D class and the Advanced studio option, emphasis is placed on 2 dimensional art and offers students the opportunity to study various media. In class students thus far have worked with watercolor, colored pencil, charcoal & chalk, pen & ink, and most recently oil pastel. Instruction in the studio class process focuses on creativity, craftmanship, application/techniques, understanding design principles, and safety.

We are currently working on blending techniques and oil pastel application. Students have explored setting up and drawing a still life. They must pay close attention to highlights and shadows, to accurately depict form. In Exploring 2D Art, students have learned about the artist Wayne Thiebaugh and have begun sketching and planning their final still life composition based on their favorite dessert. The 2D studio art class is currently learning about Georgia O’Keefe and will be pulling their inspiration from the artist and nature for their oil pastel drawings.

Visual Arts: 2D Studio Year long (Ms. Berberich)

Mediums and techniques have been the focus for the past quarter. They have used oil pastels, watercolors, and acrylic. We are also going to be exploring 2D techniques on Clay when we create tiles. Students have learned color theory and acrylic painting techniques through large cactus paintings. This class, unlike the semester 2D class, goes more in-depth with the techniques, applications, and mediums.

Visual Arts: Creative Photography Course (Mrs. Lightbody)

Digital Photography is a yearlong introduction to the digital camera as an art-making tool designed for students at the beginning level. The course will use digital photography to help students learn and apply the basic elements of art and the principles of design. Cellphone photography and editing with a variety of phone applications is infused in the curriculum. This course will also provide students with opportunities to extend their knowledge and skills in the field of photography and the use of Adobe Lightroom and Photopea.

Coming Soon… Series of Photographs

Students become familiar with an inspirational photographer and the photographer’s genre of photography. Student will be creating a presentation on the photographer, while photographing their own images in that genre to create a series of photographs (10-15 photographs). Students learn that a theme running through the many works unifies it as a collection. The theme is stated and restated in different yet interconnected ways, and the viewer can look at the collection and understand more easily what the artist is trying to convey.
