Principal's Welcome
New Principal's Welcome Message
Dear SOAR Families,
Welcome to a new school year!
It is an honor to begin my first year as Principal of SOAR High School and to join a community with such an extraordinary history of student success.
As I have spent time listening and learning this summer, one thing has become clear: SOAR's success has been built through the collective commitment of students, families, faculty, staff, and leaders who believe deeply in what young people can accomplish.
That belief aligns closely with my leadership philosophy: High Expectations. Unwavering Support. Genuine Belonging (Hug).
At SOAR, we will challenge students to take ownership of their education—to attend consistently, work hard, communicate, advocate for themselves, seek help, learn from mistakes, and treat others with respect. High expectations, however, must always be accompanied by strong support. Our students should know there are adults here who believe in them and will help them navigate challenges.
And every student should know one more thing: you belong here.
When I visited our summer school classrooms, I shared something with students that I hope they carry with them throughout their SOAR journey: You are your ancestors' wildest dream.
I want our students to understand that simply being here is something worthy of pride. Their families are proud of them. We are proud of them. They carry with them the hopes, hard work, and sacrifices of generations before them as they earn a high school diploma, work toward an associate degree, and prepare to attend a four-year university.
And when a class becomes difficult, a grade does not go as planned, or they experience a setback, we are no less proud of them. Challenge is part of the journey. We will help them learn, persist, and keep moving forward.
Families, your voice matters. As part of my continued Listening & Learning, I invite you to complete our caregiver survey to help me better understand this community and how SOAR can best support your student.
As your Principal, I will work to be visible, accessible, thoughtful, and student-centered while honoring SOAR's strong foundation.
Please also review the important operational details below for the first week of school so our students can begin prepared and ready for a great start. You will notice updates for both campuses (SOAR High School) and campus specific announcements (Lancaster Campus & Palmdale Campus)
Dream High. SOAR Higher.
Extending you and your family a HUG,
Dr. Krishna Darlene Spates
Proud Principal

Dra. Krishna Darlene Spates
Directora Orgullosa

SOAR Early College Campus Expectations and Supervision Notice
Campus Structure and Student Supervision Notice
SOAR High School operates in a unique early college environment on a college campus, providing students with an increased level of independence and responsibility. While we strongly encourage students to remain on campus for safety and security, parents and guardians should be aware that students will have the ability to move between the high school, college campus, and surrounding areas during the school day.
Students are expected to make responsible, safe, and informed decisions about their whereabouts. As members of the SOAR community, students are trusted to uphold high standards of integrity, accountability, and personal responsibility. Maintaining this trust is an essential part of the SOAR experience.
Important Notice to Parents and Guardians:
Due to the structure of our campus, parents and guardians should be aware that there are extended periods during the school day when students are not under the direct supervision of Antelope Valley Union High School District (AVUHSD) staff.
Students are required to enroll in and attend a minimum of two high school classes Monday through Thursday, and a minimum of four high school classes on Fridays. When students are physically present in a high school class, they are under the direct supervision of AVUHSD staff. At all other times during the school day, students may be unsupervised by district personnel.
Given this structure, students are expected to conduct themselves similarly to independent college students while on campus. Parents and guardians are encouraged to maintain regular communication with their student regarding their schedule, whereabouts, and expectations during unsupervised periods. You may access your student’s schedule through PowerSchool. If you need assistance, please contact the main office of the SOAR campus your student attends.
Students are expected to follow all school rules, district policies, and campus expectations while participating in the SOAR program. Failure to demonstrate responsible decision-making, maintain appropriate conduct, or meet supervision and safety expectations may result in disciplinary action and/or transfer back to the student’s home high school.
Transitioning from the Plus and Minus Grading System to a Flat Grading System
As we prepare to welcome back our students for the new school year, we are writing to inform you of an incoming adjustment to our district’s grading system. We will be formally transitioning to a flat grading system and phasing out the use of the plus and minus effective the 2026-2027 academic year.
We have come to this conclusion due to a number of factors:
The plus or minus does not have any effect over the points in our current grading system. As it stands now, for example, a B+, B, and B- are all worth the same amount of points when factored into a student’s grade point average.
Currently, we have to declare we are a plus and minus system to universities as our students apply for higher education. This causes confusion and does not align with the way grade points are added in our current system. It can also be considered a form of false advertisement to these universities.
This change will help avoid misalignment amongst teachers and help balance grading.
Phasing out the plus and minus helps eliminate a barrier for programs that may consider lower grades, such as a C-, to be equivalent to a D.
Overall, the transition to flat grading will formalize the existing grading system on paper and help alleviate any confusion or misunderstanding between students, teachers, families, colleges and universities.
-Thank you for your continued support of Antelope Valley Union High School District.

Pick Up & Drop Off
As we return to school, thank you for helping us keep arrival and dismissal safe, smooth, and efficient for everyone.
Students may be picked up once their school day ends. Families may briefly park in any AVC student parking lot; citations are issued for vehicles parked in staff or accessible/handicapped spaces without authorization. The lots closest to SOAR are E4 and E5 near the AVC Softball Stadium and Tennis Courts, accessible from 32nd Street West.
Please remember:
- The lane near the tennis courts is drive-through only; parking or waiting is not permitted.
- Please use a designated parking space for drop-off or pick-up whenever possible.
- Do not stop or wait in the roadway, at stop signs, in fire lanes, or in loading zones.
- Students may be picked up in the loading zone only when they are already outside and ready to enter the vehicle.
- Students may meet their ride in a parking space once the vehicle is fully parked.
- Students should always use the crosswalk when entering or leaving the parking lot.
- Please remain alert, courteous, and off your cell phone while driving on campus.
We encourage families to identify a consistent pick-up/drop-off location away from the busiest traffic areas. Your cooperation helps us create a safer and more efficient experience for our entire SOAR community.

Pick Up & Drop Off
Please follow traffic laws and drive slowly to ensure our children and staff are safe. A few updates to drop off and pick up:
- Pull all the way forward to the end of the parking lot, please do not stop at the walk way -- there is a line of cars also waiting to drop off over 300 students.
- There is one lane in the parking lot, do not pass -- you may inadvertently cause harm to a child or staff member (someone's loved one).
- Ensure your student has their items ready to go when it is time to exit the car. This year we will have over 300 students coming to campus each day.
- Please, watch for pedestrians.
- Follow staff directions. Mr. LaShawn and Mr. Juan are here for everyone's safety.
- Remind your student to only cross the street with our campus security.
- Any SOAR Palmdale student who needs a TAP card to ride the AVTA Bus can come to the Front Office to receive one.
Early Pick-Up / Student Check-Out
- Parents/guardians should ALWAYS check in with the Front Office when picking up their student, even if the student is attending an AVC class at AVC Palmdale.
- We need to be informed whenever a student is leaving campus for the day.
- In the past, our Campus Supervisor, Mr. Miranda, was stationed at AVC Palmdale to assist with student check-out.
- Since all of our students are now based at the main SOAR Palmdale campus for their high school classes, Mr. Miranda has been relocated to our campus.
- AVC Palmdale has its own security team, who will continue to monitor the building and ensure students remain safe while on their campus.
Need a Chromebook or Hotspot for Home Use?
All technology will be distributed during the second week of school to those who turn in a technology agreement and complete the Google form linked to this post. Technology agreement can be picked up in the front office.
