Whole School Read Alouds 📖
Preschool and Kindergarten
During the month of June teachers and students in preschool and kindergarten will engage in a read aloud of Be a Bridge by Irene Latham and Charles Waters. Be a Bridge teaches children that small acts of kindness can help bring people together. Through simple rhyming text and colorful illustrations, students learn ways to be caring friends by welcoming others, listening, helping classmates, including everyone in play, and standing up for what is right. The story encourages children to build a classroom community where everyone feels safe, valued, and connected.
Conversation Starters
- How can we help others feel welcome at school?
- What can you do when you see someone playing alone?
- How can you be a kind friend today?
- What are some ways we can help someone who is feeling sad or upset?
- How can we show respect when someone else is talking?
Grade 1 and Grade 2
This month, our first and second grade students are reading Maddi's Fridge by Lois Brandt. This thoughtful story follows two best friends, Sofia and Maddi. When Sofia learns that Maddi's family does not always have enough food, she faces a difficult challenge: how can she help her friend while respecting her feelings and keeping her promise?
As students read the story, they will explore important themes such as empathy, friendship, kindness, problem-solving, and helping others in respectful ways. The book also provides an opportunity to discuss how communities can support one another during difficult times.
Conversation Starters:
- What is a friend?
- How do friends help and care for one another?
- Why do you think Maddi did not want Sofia to tell others about her empty refrigerator?
- How did Sofia show kindness and empathy toward Maddi?
- What are some ways we can help others while still respecting their feelings and privacy?
- Why is it important to ask for help when someone is struggling?
