Senior Seminar Speaker
The Senior Seminar class, developed in partnership
with the Michigan College Access Network, is now in its seventh year.
It allows 12th grade students the time and support to prepare for the next step in their education, whether that is at a college, university, trade/training school, or the military.
Each week, guests visit the class to share their knowledge and inform students of their many post-secondary education options. Here are student reflections from our recent speakers.
University of Michigan
by Evan Shirling
This past Friday, we had the opportunity to hear from a representative from the University of Michigan. He explained a lot about the school and its many different programs. He wasn’t very enthusiastic about the school, but he did seem to know a lot about it. U of M is a very huge school and they probably don’t need people to promote it anyway. His purpose for speaking was not to encourage us to go there, it was to help us to learn about all the different programs and opportunities there. We know the sports are good so he focused on the academic portion of the school. U of M is a very big school for medical, business, and engineering programs and it is ranked very highly in the country. The engineering program is very good, but they are very expensive. It has an extremely nice-looking campus too. People have said that they feel very comfortable going there. I would like it more if it was a little closer because I would rather live at home if it was close enough, but if it was further away I would gladly live on campus too.
I would have loved to go to the University of Michigan, but I found out that they are extremely picky with transfer credits. By the end of this year, I will have an associate's degree and it would be a huge waste if none of the credits would transfer. Purdue has a better engineering program anyways. They also accept all of my credits which is very good. I hate to rule this school out of my list, but there is just not a big enough advantage to this school to accept the fact that my credits will be useless. Overall, I think that the speaker did a great job giving us all of the information that we needed. Many people thought he was weird and he was, but he was very informative. Again, U of M doesn’t need to promote why to go there. We all know it is a great school, we just needed to hear what opportunities we would have there.
Oakland University
by Lauren Abromaitis
Last Friday, we had a representative from Oakland University come and speak to our class about their school. Our speaker was very quick, simple, and easy to catch up on. She was involved with the crowd and even answered some very helpful questions.
When she arrived, she had a beaming smile from ear to ear and was pumped to tell us about her campus. With her words, she was amping up her campus and how great it would be to be a grizzly. She handed us a brochure with boatloads of information and went over it with our step by step. The information was super helpful and is helping my decision to go to Oakland. That has always been my dream school because of how convenient it is. It’s close enough to home but also far enough that I feel the independence.
I applied with hopes of getting in and I got in and was over the moon excited because that is where I want to go. When I graduate, I will be graduating with almost all my freshman credits and Oakland will take them all. So I know none of my hard work will be jeopardized and that it will all go over smoothly.
In the end, I really enjoyed her and her enthusiasm for showing us Oakland. I would recommend her to anyone that is on the fence about going there. She was super helpful and super kind.
