Greetings LISD Families!

Welcome back to school! If you are a returning family, it's so good to see you again and I'm excited to catch up with your children and teens. If you are a new family, I'm so delighted you're with us now, and I can't wait to get to know you and your child(ren) this year. I am the principal of both the elementary and secondary schools, so I have two offices and run back and forth across campus all day. If you pop in, I might just be on the other side of campus, but both Ronda and Karrie, our wonderful office coordinators, generally know where to find me and can schedule a meeting if you need to speak with me.

We are rolling out some exciting new mastery based learning and assessment practices this year. The big goals are continuity and consistency. Elementary teachers will be sending out welcome letters with information about their class, and each letter will include our district-wide Portrait of a Graduate shared outcomes and how they will be incorporated into the curriculum and instruction for that classroom. They are also creating something new called "Badge Books" to help students track the standards they are working on and mastering. Secondary teachers have created common grading practices, as well as common syllabus and Canvas page templates. Like the elementary welcome letters, the syllabus for each course will provide information about our Portrait of a Graduate shared outcomes and how students will have opportunities to practice and get feedback on those in each course. Syllabi will also provide information about grading practices and course specific information about what students will be learning and doing, and what they will need for the course.

Secondary students will also be experiencing some new cell phone expectations and consequences this year. We will review those with students during the first two days of school. Parents will get two Parent Square messages on Wednesday about grading practices and cell phone expectations, with a request to provide an electronic signature that you have read and understand the information.

Our staff has been working hard to welcome students back to school and get ready for an awesome year. There is a buzz of positive energy, and I have a feeling this is going to be a great school year.

All my best,

Martha Martin, K-12 Principal
