From Principal Lakin's Desk
Hello Davisburg Community,
So as of today, I have a been principal at Davisburg for a month and I continue to be in awe of the welcoming atmosphere the students, staff, and community members created for each other. I am so thankful to be at Davisburg.
Friendly reminders that students do not have school on Monday or Tuesday. We hope you enjoy the extended weekend with your families. On Tuesday, our staff will be engaged in professional development focused on strengthening instructional practices, refining supports, and collaborating on ways to better meet the needs of every student we serve. Our team will be hard at work growing professionally so we can continue providing the highest quality learning experience possible.
As we continue through the second half of the school year, there is an incredible sense of momentum in our building. Students are continuing to grow, our staff continues to innovate and collaborate, and our partnership with families remains a cornerstone of our success. The months ahead hold tremendous opportunity, and I am genuinely optimistic about what we will accomplish together.
With Presidents Day upon us, I also want to take a moment to reflect. I have long admired President Abraham Lincoln for his character, humility, perseverance, and moral courage during one of the most divided times in our nation’s history. His leadership reminds us that integrity and compassion matter. One of my favorite
Lincoln quotes is:
“Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in.”
Those words resonate deeply in a school community like ours. Education is not just important it is foundational to the future of our children and our country.
It is a privilege to serve as your principal, and I remain deeply committed to supporting our students, championing our outstanding staff, and strengthening our connection with you, our families.
Thank you for your continued partnership and trust. Enjoy the long weekend, and we look forward to welcoming students back refreshed and ready to learn on Wednesday!

Revisiting Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
When you seek first to understand, then to be understood, you listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. You try to see things from their viewpoint. It can be difficult to listen without interrupting, even for adults. However, it is important as a skill to completely understand the other person.
Ways to practice Habit 5: Try going a set amount of time without talking, even once. Watch the people around you, listen and see if you gain a greater understanding of them. Talk as a family about someone you feel is a good listener, what makes them good at this? How does it make you feel?
