Scholar of the Week
Amanda Quintanilla was nominated by Greg Nunez. "Amanda has been doing an amazing job since entering high school. She is part of the Track Team and is doing great work with AVID. She is getting all A's and B's and had a 3.66 GPA in last semester, putting her on the honor roll. Though she is quiet, she is well-liked by her peers and teachers alike. Congrats to Amanda!"
Senior of the Week
Simin Chen was nominated by her counselor, Mr. Roach. "I’m proud to nominate Simin Chen as Senior of the Week. Simin is an incredibly hardworking student who approaches her education with a positive attitude and a genuine desire to do her best. Every time she stops by my office to chat, she is always so polite, kind, and thoughtful. Those small interactions always leave a great impression and really reflect the type of person she is. What makes Simin’s journey especially meaningful is the growth she has shown over her four years at Rowland. She began high school in the ELD program and, through her dedication and persistence, successfully reclassified. Since then, she has continued to challenge herself and is now thriving in Advanced Placement courses. Seeing that kind of progress and determination has been truly inspiring. Simin’s hard work, resilience, and positive attitude will continue to take her far in life, and I’m excited to see where her future takes her. Congratulations, Simin!"
Athlete of the Week
Sabrina Su was nominated by her badminton Coach, Kevin. "As our varsity badminton captain, Sabrina leads by example through her relentless hard work and dedication on the court. She makes sure that our events run smoothly and goes out of her way to make everyone feel completely welcome and supported."
Arts Person of the Week
Kevin Chen, nominated by the theater department chair, Mr. Harris. "For his exemplary dedication to the craft, his spirit of collaboration and encouragement toward his fellow castmates, and the ways he has begun to embody and make this role his own, we would like to recognize Kevin Chen for this week’s theatre spotlight."
Innovator of the Week
Ericka Mejia was nominated by her CTE teacher, Mrs. Janicke. "Erika Mejia is a student who demonstrates genuine engagement and enthusiasm for learning. She actively participates in class discussions, asking thoughtful questions and contributing meaningful responses. What stands out most is that she brings an authentic aliveness and expression to her learning and to the classroom."
Read Across America Celebration
In celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday, Mrs. Vasey’s 2nd-period English 9 honors class spent an hour sharing the magic of reading with Mrs. Aranda’s kindergarten class from Killian Elementary. The celebration opened with each Killian student being paired with one or two of our Rowland students to spend some time practicing their freshly developed reading skills. The kindergarteners were excited to pick books from the vast array of children’s classics our library staff had on hand for them. As the pages turned and the stories unfolded, laughter filled the room, creating a joyous atmosphere of learning. Our students not only read with the kindergarteners, but they also engaged them in interactive discussions about the stories, encouraging curiosity and imagination. As attention spans waned, the groups moved on to bond over Legos, Connect 4, and coloring. The kindergarten students were given reading-themed snap bracelets and tattoos to remember the fun day, while the teens were treated to Fruit by the Foot from their kinder pals. As Dr. Seuss himself once said, “ You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.” May we continue to inspire the next generation through the magic of reading.
RHS Debate Club Fall Tournament
The Rowland High School Debate Team delivered an impressive showing at the 2025–2026 Winter Debate Tournament, hosted by the Orange County Debate League. With four teams representing RHS throughout the competition, each representing a diverse group of students made up of Seniors, Juniors, and Freshmen. Our students demonstrated confidence, preparation, and determination as they engaged in rigorous rounds of debate.
Our seniors also distinguished themselves with outstanding individual speaking performances. Jesse Zhou earned the First Place Speaker Golden Gavel, Celina Poon placed 3rd Speaker, and Sabrina Su secured the 9th Place Speaker spot. These impressive results highlight the strength and dedication of our senior debaters in a highly competitive field.
The RHS Debate Club continues to be a source of pride for our school community. As a fully student-run organization, members lead the way in research, mentoring, organization, and tournament preparation. Their passion for thoughtful discussion, persuasive speaking, and intellectual challenge truly reflects the spirit of Rowland High.
Congratulations to our Debate Team for representing RHS with excellence, dedication, and Raider pride!
Special thanks to all who participated Celina Poon, Jesse Zhou, Sabrina Su, Leah Tsoi, Abbi Liman, Gabby Gonzalez, Logan De La Cruz, Audrey Chou, Ghisele Yang, Evan Tsoi, Nicholas Leong, and Alton Lewes.
