Next week brings the final School Committee meeting of the year, which includes a year-end progress report on year 2 of our 2024-2027 BPS Strategic Plan, the finalization of the new unified districtwide handbook, and an update on Chromebooks at JGMS. Thank you for your ongoing support of our schools as we celebrate the hard work of our students and staff as the year comes to a close.

June 7: Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day June 7: Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day

Tourette Syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by involuntary, sudden, and repetitive movements or sounds known as tics. One in 50 school-aged children has Tourette Syndrome or a persistent tic disorder, and in Massachusetts alone, there are roughly 53,000 people with Tourette Syndrome or a tic disorder. Bedford High School graduating senior Ryan Zlatkov (pictured) helped advocate for the recognition of Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day on June 7. As someone who has lived with TS for as long as he can remember, Ryan understands firsthand the challenges, misunderstandings, and stigma that can accompany the condition. Through his advocacy, he hopes to increase awareness and understanding of Tourette Syndrome and other tic disorders, helping to replace misconceptions with compassion and creating a school community where all students feel seen, accepted, and supported. Ryan’s message reminds us that no one should feel alone or ashamed because of something they cannot control, and that greater awareness helps build a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.

Holi: A Celebration of Spring and Community Holi: A Celebration of Spring and Community

A Childhood Tradition Continues, by Sushma Raja, Parent of Two BPS Students

Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, is a vibrant celebration observed by many South Asian communities. It symbolizes the arrival of spring, the end of winter, and the blossoming of love. Growing up in the United States, Holi has always meant more to me than just a celebration with colors—it has been one of the ways I stayed connected to my Indian roots while growing up in America. My parents would tell me stories about how they celebrated in India—running through the streets with friends and family, covered head to toe in bright colors—and it was hard to imagine doing something like that in our neighborhood. Even though my experience looked different from the large family celebrations and street festivals in India, my parents and community found beautiful ways to make the holiday special for us. Every year, we celebrated Holi at our temple and Sunday School with friends, where we would throw bright colors at each other, and then share snacks and dance to music in the parking lot. Those moments became some of my favorite childhood memories because they made me feel connected to both my culture and my community growing up in America. Now, as a parent myself, I want to pass those same traditions on to my children so they can grow up with the same sense of pride, belonging, and happiness that Holi gave me.

Please join us for our annual Bedford Holi celebration on E Field on June 7th (rain date June 14), between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. We are excited to welcome the broader Bedford community to join us for an afternoon filled with color, music, photo opportunities, delicious food, and the joy of community spirit.
