Dear Bedford Public Schools Community,

June 7: Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day
Tourette Syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by involuntary, sudden, and repetitive movements or sounds known as tics. One in 50 school-aged children has Tourette Syndrome or a persistent tic disorder, and in Massachusetts alone, there are roughly 53,000 people with Tourette Syndrome or a tic disorder. Bedford High School graduating senior Ryan Zlatkov (pictured) helped advocate for the recognition of Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day on June 7. As someone who has lived with TS for as long as he can remember, Ryan understands firsthand the challenges, misunderstandings, and stigma that can accompany the condition. Through his advocacy, he hopes to increase awareness and understanding of Tourette Syndrome and other tic disorders, helping to replace misconceptions with compassion and creating a school community where all students feel seen, accepted, and supported. Ryan’s message reminds us that no one should feel alone or ashamed because of something they cannot control, and that greater awareness helps build a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.
