Principals' Greeting
Dear Pleasant Valley Families,
It was a great week having students back in the building after Spring Break last week. It seemed like lots of students had some fun with their friends and family and came back rested and ready to learn. We ended up having a very busy and full week at Pleasant Valley. Specifically, we had our first 2 hour late start to support teacher collaboration and Professional Learning Community (PLC) work on Wednesday, and then students began their Spring i-Ready testing on Thursday. Please be aware students will be finishing up i-Ready testing next week on Tuesday 4/15 and then make-ups throughout the week.
Spring is certainly in bloom at PVM. The grass is growing, trees are blooming and the weather is still oscillating between cold, warm and of course, rainy. Please make sure your student is dressed appropriately to brave the ever changing weather elements. Warm and comfortable students make for better learners in the classroom.
Please remember that Spring sports season starts on Monday 4/14 with our track season kick-off. Track is available for all 6th-8th grade students and we highly encourage our Pleasant Valley kids to get out and participate. Yearly our school has one of the highest number of participation rates among all BGPS middle schools. Our teachers, staff and track coaches all know that students that are involved are more likely to excel in school. If your student or family have questions about getting involved, please contact our front office and we will help to get your child started.
Thank you to everyone for your continued support and partnership with Pleasant Valley Middle School. Our teachers and staff work extremely hard to make sure we are pushing the educational envelope and also supporting your child on a holistic level. We want each and every student at Pleasant Valley to be known by Name, Strength and Need. We look forward to a great rest of the school year working with your family and with your students.
Have a fantastic week.
Austin Brothers (Principal)
Erin Thompson (Assistant Principal)
Special announcement
Parents, we wanted to remind everyone of our no aerosols/perfumes/cologne policy at Pleasant Valley. We have multiple students and staff that are highly allergic to scents. Using any aerosol/perfume/cologne while at school can cause harm to these individuals. We are asking all students and staff to not wear perfume or cologne while at school. In no circumstances should anyone reapply cologne or perfume while at school. If you have any questions about this, please contact our office for support.
In addition, we are asking all parents and guardians to be mindful of cell phone use and their speed while driving in our parking lot. We have had a recent uptick of cars driving too fast and drivers not paying attention; this has resulted in a couple of near misses in the parking lot. Please take a moment to slow down and keep everyone safe on campus.
Have a great week-
Austin and Erin
Levy Facts - Last day to turn in ballots, April 22nd 8pm
Levy information for Pleasant Valley Middle families
Remember to vote! Replacement levy (Proposition 9) on the April 22 ballot
Ballots will soon be in the mail and should arrive in mailboxes by April 4. On your ballot is a replacement education and operations levy for Battle Ground Public Schools. Local levy funding makes up the difference between state funding and the real-world cost to educate students. For instance, at our school the levy funds:
Middle school sports
Special education
Technology support staff
Custodial services
Multilingual support
Safety support staff
Mental health support
Curriculum
Teachers
Class sizes (keeping them lower)
Busing
Music
Extracurricular activities
Maintenance
Grounds
Centralized support, including health/nursing
The replacement levy would allow the district to continue current service levels beyond 2025, when the existing education and operations levy expires. Please take the time to look over our levy information page, and consider attending one of two upcoming public forums to learn more about the levy.
- The first of those meetings will be on Tuesday, April 8 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Lewisville campus (406 NW 5th Ave., Battle Ground).
- The second is Wednesday, April 16, at Prairie High School in the media center.
Can’t make it to the presentation? Here is a short informational video about the levy. You can also find more information, including FAQs and a calculator, on the district’s website.
Remember to return your ballot by April 22. Track your ballot and see if it was counted at VoteWA.gov.
Ballots may be deposited at a ballot drop off location as soon as you receive it in the mail, no need to wait until the 22nd!
You should receive your ballot between April 1 and April 4. The deadline to vote is 8 p.m. on April 22.

Survey of BGPS students, families
Understanding the perspectives of the people who make up Battle Ground Public Schools is important as we continue working toward improvement. This month, you and your family have an opportunity to share their thoughts in an optional survey administered by the Center for Educational Effectiveness.
All parents and guardians will receive the survey via email on April 8. Students in fifth through 12th grades also will receive the survey, unless a parent or guardian opted them out in the annual student update. The surveys will close on May 2. Learn more.
BGPS board selects Shelly Whitten as next superintendent
The Battle Ground Public Schools board of directors voted to appoint Shelly Whitten to be the next superintendent of the district. Whitten, the district’s current deputy superintendent, will begin her new role on July 1, 2025. She will replace current Superintendent Denny Waters, who is retiring.
”It is an honor to serve the community I grew up in and love,” said Whitten, “There’s no place I’d rather invest my passion and energy.”

National Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day April 24th
Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day is coming up on Thursday, April 24th. This day is an opportunity for students to learn about the world of work, the challenges their parents face and how the school work they do today will help them in their future.
If your child will be participating in this and going to work with someone that day, please pick up a form at the office, or download one below, to pre-excuse their absence. Completed and signed forms should be returned to the office before April 24th. Your child's absence will be excused, but they will still be responsible for completing the work covered in class that day.

Google Workspaces - students can access their work anywhere
Battle Ground Public Schools uses Google Workspaces for Education. This includes apps like Docs, Slides, Sheets and Forms. Working within Google programs helps students build valuable future-ready skills and collaborate digitally.
They can also access their work anywhere using their district Google account. Starting in sixth grade, students may be assigned a Chromebook that they can use while at school and take home at the end of the school day. Check out Guardian’s guide to Google tools for more information on how these resources support student learning and help to keep them safe online. Learn more and find other resources for going online.
Notes from the Nurse
WA immunization requirements
Life threatening health condition/allergy
If your student has a life threatening medical condition/allergy, we must have updated health information each year as well as medication at school forms for any rescue medications that need to be kept at the nurse's office at school. Parents and nurses work together to create an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for what to do for your child in the case of a medical emergency. Please contact our nurses if your student has a life threatening medical condition/allergy and you have not already alerted the school and had an EAP created. Students and parents will need to meet with nurses before a student may self-carry any rescue medications.

Updating contact and health information
Parents/guardians please make sure you are updating the School Health Form in Skyward each year so that we have correct and current information regarding your child/ren (complete the "Update" in Skyward Family Access. Update opens August 1st each year to update school forms.). Skyward does not pull information forward each school year. There are many School Health Forms that have not been updated for 2-4 years. We need current information and this is how we most often know if your child has a Life threatening health condition. We want to keep your child/ren safe while at school and we can't do our job if we do not have correct and updated information.
Thank you for your time in this important matter.
From your School Nurse Janel Salisbury, BSN, RN & Building Nurse Diane Davis, LPN

Report incidents anonymously with Vector Solutions reporting system
Report, don’t repost
If you see or hear of a possible threat, please report it to law enforcement directly and/or to school staff. This is the best and most helpful action because it begins an investigation and helps to limit the potential for misinformation to spread.
Reposting or sharing a threat on social media in an attempt to warn others spreads the threat farther from its original source and may cause unnecessary alarm and fear.
You can report bullying, intimidation, harassment, threats and safety concerns using our anonymous reporting system. Emergencies should always be reported to 911.
