GREATNESS IN THE CLASSROOM GREATNESS IN THE CLASSROOM

Greatness in the Learning Commons!!!!

Welcome to the RCHS Learning Commons!

You may be wondering, “What is a Learning Commons?”. We are a library brought into the 21-century focusing on communication, collaboration, and active learning. The Learning Commons is an open, flexible space for all of our students and staff to use! This space belongs to us all: classes, clubs, all students and staff.

What do we all have to create such an inviting learning space?

One of the most notable features that we offer is a Makerspace. In the Makerspace, everyone has access to a wide range of supplies and equipment.

  • Design and make your own button pins.

  • Use the CNC milling machine to carve, engrave, drill, mill, and cut your own designs on a wide variety of materials.

  • Use the Silhouette Cameo, a desktop cutting machine (much like a Cricut), to make your own designs with fabric, cardstock, vinyl, magnet sheets, ink, stencil material and more!

  • Build your own unique robot with Cubelets. Each cube has a different function so the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

  • Program an all-terrain robot.

  • Print your own posters.

  • Use our supply of digital cameras and camcorders.

  • Cut out over 300 letters and shapes using our die cuts and big supply of construction paper.

  • Also available: whiteboard tables, 3D printer, lamination machines, book binding machine, flatbed scanner, paper cutter, craft supplies, games, puzzles, desktop computers, color printer, and more!

That sure is quite the collection! But that just includes our Makerspace.

Our staff has access to a professional library that includes:

  • Videos

  • Professional development books

  • Classroom novel sets

  • Breakout EDU boxes

  • Virtual Reality headsets

  • Swivl robots and iPads to record lessons and presentations

But wait there’s more! Don’t forget our expansive collection of over 6,000 books including novels, graphic novels, manga, biographies, nonfiction reference, picture books, and more.

What if you cannot make it into the Learning Commons in person? Never fear. The RCHS Learning Commons also has an extensive collection of digital resources for staff and students alike.

  • We have several digital databases that contain current and reliable resources on a wide variety of topics. These are great to use when there is a research paper or project for any class.

  • Sora by OverDrive gives our students and staff access to a big collection of ebooks and audiobooks on any device that has an internet connection.

  • Staff have access to programs like Book Creator and Swank Streaming to utilize in their classrooms.

We covered a lot of what the RCHS Learning Commons has to offer. We are always growing our collection and resources for our learning community. Students and staff are always welcome to recommend titles, resources, or equipment that they would like to use in the Learning Commons. Ultimately, we are here to help you!

BLAST FROM THE PAST

When I was out at my conference last week I found a pay phone at an intersection and IT WORKS!!!! Just a history lesson for those who have not encountered these. They used to be everywhere and for a quarter you could make a local call for a matter of minutes! I have not found a working pay phone in a long time so I thought I would share.
