Dear BCJ Families 🏫🖤💛

We hope our BCJ families enjoyed the recent snow days and were able to stay safe, warm, and connected during the winter weather. While time away from school can be unexpected, it also offers a reminder of how important it is to care for ourselves and one another as a community.

As we return to school, we kindly ask that students come dressed for the cold temperatures. Warm coats, hats, gloves, and scarves help our children stay comfortable during arrival, dismissal, and transitions throughout the day, allowing them to focus on learning and growing.

Thank you for your continued partnership and trust. We look forward to welcoming our students back to school, where they are loved, supported, and always belong.

Partnering to Build Strong Readers

At BCJ, we are intentionally building students’ automaticity with Fundations (Trick Words). These are words students must recognize quickly and automatically in order to read smoothly, accurately, and with strong understanding.

During the school day, teachers provide direct instruction and guided practice with Fundations Trick Words. To protect instructional time, this learning will continue to take place at school. However, short, consistent practice at home greatly strengthens what students are learning in the classroom.

To support this work, we are sending home Fundations Trick Word flashcards. These can be printed and used at home. Please reach out to me if you would like copies sent home with your child.

🕒 How families can help at home (1–5 minutes):

Review 5 sight words at a time using the flashcards
Show the card and have your child say the word quickly
If your child hesitates longer than a few seconds, say the word and move on
Ask your child to spell the word aloud using letter names
Use the word in a simple sentence (provided)
Keep practice brief, positive, and encouraging
Stop after a few minutes — short practice is best

When students recognize words automatically, they can focus their energy on understanding what they read.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Just a few minutes of practice at home makes a powerful difference. When school and home work together, our Eagles grow into strong, confident readers. 💛🦅

Thank you to our families for joining us for our 2nd Quarter Awards Programs on Friday, January 23. Your presence, encouragement, and pride made each celebration even more meaningful for our students. Seeing families gather to celebrate growth, effort, and achievement truly reflects the strength of our BCJ community.

We also extend a heartfelt thank you to our specialist team for facilitating each grade-level awards session. Your care and commitment helped us ensure that our student felt seen, celebrated, and supported while maintaining a strong instructional day.

We are incredibly proud of our Eagles and grateful for the partnership between home and school that helps our students soar.🦅

The Sum of Us

Mark your calendars for Friday, January 30, 2026, and join us for our 2026 Community Book Study! This year’s selection is The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee, a powerful exploration of how moving beyond “zero-sum” thinking helps communities thrive together. Grounded in the spirit of Ubuntu, this book invites us to reflect on how what harms one of us ultimately affects us all.

To get a preview, check out Heather McGhee’s TED Talk, “Racism has a cost for everyone.” Let’s learn and grow together as aCommUNITY.
