The Howler - November 16, 2024
The Ottauquechee School's weekly newsletter
Announcements & Reminders
Dear families,
Did you know that several times each year, a mixed group of OQS teachers takes an opportunity to observe classrooms throughout the school? We do this in order to learn from one another, to celebrate our shared successes, and to identify next steps in our journey. I had the pleasure to lead two such "walks" this week. Check out the snapshots below, and look for some more takeaways in next week's Howler!
Registration is LIVE for our Ski Program! Please see below for more info.
Last but not least, as we spread respect, kindness and joy throughout our school community, check out this short article, shared by our HSD special education department: 12 things teachers and parents should say to each other more often.
Have a wonderful weekend,

Principal

Week 10: Bathrooms and Gender
“The truth is we trans people are so much more scared of you than you are of us.” - Jackson Bird on being trans (6-minute video)
Have you heard the claim that transgender bathroom bans are about “protecting” the most “vulnerable’? There is absolutely no evidence that trans people using a bathroom aligned with their gender identity increases safety risks for cisgender folks. But there is substantial evidence showing that trans and other gender nonconforming people are at risk, including being frequently denied access, verbally harassed, or physically assaulted while trying to use public restrooms. For school-aged kids, consider:
At least 40% of LGBTQ+ students avoided school bathrooms, locker rooms, and physical education or gym classes because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable.
1 in 3 LGBTQ+ students have been prevented from using the bathroom that aligned with their gender identity.
23.8% had been prevented from using the locker room that aligned with their gender.
8% have had a kidney or urinary tract infection in the last year due to avoiding restrooms. (Sourced from GLSEN’s 2015 & 2021 school climate surveys)
So if we are serious about protecting the most vulnerable (and we are), let’s ensure trans kids have access to the bathrooms and locker rooms they feel safest in and, even better—we need to move towards gender inclusive bathrooms for all.

Opportunity for Public Engagement
The AOE has released additional dates for their Listen & Learn Tour:
- December 3: King Street Center, 87 King St., Burlington, VT
- December 3: Brattleboro Union High School 131 Fairground Rd, Brattleboro, VT
- December 4 : Champlain Valley Union High School, 369 Cvu Rd, Hinesburg, VT

I (Amelia) attended a session for educators last week and found it valuable to hear the questions and feedback that educators around the state shared with agency officials during the breakout sessions.
Each public engagement session will take place from 6:00 pm. to 8:00 pm. Every session begins with introductory information and data to support more in-depth conversations, followed by breakout sessions on topics related to student achievement and support, career and college readiness, and school budgets, among other emerging priorities. Every public engagement session includes the same information and agenda.
Please check the Listen and Learn webpage to see the most up to date public engagement schedules, links for virtual sessions and information on language accessibility. While not required, pre-registration is encouraged using the online registration form. Please email aoe.publicinformation@vermont.gov with questions.
