Hermosa School Family Newsletter
November 18-22
Hornet Families,
It has been a great week at Hermosa School! Below you can check out the happenings from the week and what is coming up next week.
On Thursday, our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students had the incredible opportunity to attend a motivational speaker event at Custer High School, where they listened to Mike Donahue. Mike delivered an inspiring and impactful message focused on resilience, goal-setting, and the importance of staying positive in the face of challenges. He encouraged students to embrace their potential and take ownership of their futures. The students were engaged and left the event feeling motivated and empowered to pursue their dreams. It was a valuable experience, and we are grateful for the opportunity for our students to participate. The 6th-8th graders also make popcorn balls to help raise money to purchase gifts for the Chilcren's Home of the Black Hills!
On Tuesday of next week, November 26th, we will be conducting hearing screenings for students in preschool through 3rd grade and 5th and 7th grade. Please ensure that your child is prepared for this. Also, please remember that Thanksgiving Break begins on Wednesday, November 27th, and there will be no school until classes resume on Monday, December 2nd.
Wednesday Opportunity
- Wednesday Opportunity is an afterschool program where students can stay to catch-up on work and get additional help with their work. We will continue Wednesday Opportunity after Thanksgiving Break on Wednesday, December 4th.
It's a great day to be a Hornet!

Hermosa Holiday Giving Food Drive
Our 8th Grade Leadership Class has organized our 2nd Annual Holiday Giving Food Drive! We are asking for students and families donate items based on their grade level. Last year we raised enough food to build over 15 food baskets for local families and we would love to match or exceed that number. Monetary donations will also be accepted to purchase proteins for the food baskets.
Balloons Over Broadway
We want to invite parents and community members to come check out Ms. Snyder's Balloons Over Broadway research project. Students research and write about floats and balloons that have been used in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. They then recreate the floats and balloons to make their own parade.
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Graveman
Greetings!
Another week in the books, and our last full week of November. Time is flying by!
Next week, there will be no counseling lessons, as they only take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays. In December, we will start our annual "What do you give that isn't a gift" discussion, as students think about different meaningful and helpful gestures we can give one another. Students will then decorate an "ornament" for our giving tree.
Today I enjoyed attending the speaker Mike Donahue in Custer with our Middle School students. It was a great presentation reminding us to not compare our struggles with others and downplay what we are feeling compared to them—we are all allowed to feel, and our struggles matter. Donahue did a great job speaking to the importance of having goals, as our goals help keep us on the right path.
