THE ZONES OF REGULATION - September 15, 2026
User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

Description

The Zones of Regulation is a cognitive-behavioral framework and curriculum designed to help individuals—especially children—recognize, understand, and regulate their emotions, sensory needs, and levels of alertness.

Created by occupational therapist Leah Kuypers, the program is widely used in schools, therapy settings, and homes to support emotional self-regulation and social-emotional learning.

Overview

The Zones of Regulation is a framework that teaches self-regulation by helping individuals recognize and manage their emotions, sensory needs, and energy levels.

Each zone represents a group of emotional states or alertness levels.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Provide an understanding of Zones.

  • Provide an understanding of how to implement Zones

  • Discuss techniques used with Zones

  • Promote Zones in your practice

  • Practice using Zones with situations.

  • Gain access to resources

Who Should Attend?

Anyone who interacts regularly with children, adolescents, or even adults needing support with emotional regulation can benefit from Zones of Regulation training. The more consistency across environments (school, home, therapy), the more effective the program tends to be.

Ruby Payne's "A Framework for Understanding Poverty" - 9/22/26

Ruby Payne's "A Framework for Understanding Poverty"

Learn How Understanding The Hidden Rules of Class Can Help In the Classroom

Ruby Payne's A Framework for Understanding Poverty offers a perspective on the challenges and differences between economic classes and how they influence educational settings. The core idea is that different socioeconomic classes have distinct worldviews and behaviors, which in turn shape their "hidden rules" – unspoken cues and habits that govern how individuals interact and navigate different social contexts. These hidden rules play a significant role in a student's success in school, which often operates under middle-class norms.

Ruby Payne's Emotional Poverty

This training addresses anger, anxiety, and violence in the classroom with strategies and best practices that work in classrooms. Under-resourced students, wealthy students, and students in all demographics can benefit from calming and healing techniques.

Overview

Every evening on the news, there are multiple stories about violence and anger erupting. Workplace and school violence are increasingly a reality. Using a brain-based approach, this session looks at the underlying causes of anger, anxiety, and violence; how they develop; and the tools that can be used to change those responses. Emotions are processed 200 to 5,000 times faster than thought. To change behavior, the motivation for the behavior must be changed. This session will provide understandings on how that can be used with family, relationships, institutions, and oneself.

Objectives

  • Provides understandings of origins of anger, anxiety, and avoidance
  • Gives a language to talk about brain regulation, integration, and emotional competence
  • Provides tools for educators to address and reduce anger, anxiety, and avoidance
  • Helps educators manage the “classroom dance” that occurs between the educator and the students
  • Provides the tools to motivate good behavior
  • Identifies the differences in male and female emotional processing

Who Should Attend?

Any staff who work directly with students

POVERTY SIMULATION - October 21, 2026

Overview

A poverty simulation is an interactive experience designed to help participants understand the real-life challenges faced by individuals and families living in poverty. Rather than a lecture or documentary, it immerses people in scenarios that reflect the difficult decisions, trade-offs, and systemic barriers that people in poverty face every day.

Purpose

To build empathy, awareness, and understanding about poverty by simulating the stress, complexity, and frustration of trying to survive on limited resources.

Participants gain insight into:

  • The emotional toll of living in poverty

  • The barriers to escaping poverty (e.g., transportation, bureaucracy, stigma)

  • How systems and policies impact those in need

  • The importance of compassionate, informed service delivery

Who Should Attend?

Educators, Any school employee, Superintendent, Board Members, Healthcare Providers, Business Leaders, Law Enforcement, Policy Makers, Community Members

Ways to Participate

  1. Participant: Participate: actively engage in role-playing the lives of individuals or families living on low incomes. The simulation typically represents one month in poverty, broken into four short "weeks," each lasting about 10–15 minutes.
  2. Volunteer: Must have attended a Simulation before as a participant. volunteers play a critical role in creating a realistic and immersive experience. They staff community stations that represent the essential services and institutions low-income individuals interact with. Their job is to simulate the barriers, rules, and frustrations often encountered in real life.

RUBY PAYNE'S EMOTIONAL POVERTY 2 TRAINING - 12/2/26
User uploaded image

Has teaching ever felt more stressful?

External pressures, environmental factors, previous experiences, fear, anger—all these and more create stress and tension in the classroom. Emotional distress interrupts and can harm—even destroy—effective teaching, learning, and emotional wellness in teachers and students.

But how do these emotions develop in you and your students? The fact is many of us suffer from some form of emotional poverty. Think of it as an absence of emotional resilience or resources. Written for educators, not psychologists, Emotional Poverty, Volume 2 helps you understand and overcome emotional poverty so you can build more effective classrooms and safer schools.

PREREQUISITE: Emotional Poverty 1 Training

Overview

This workshop is for individuals who work with children and adolescents and need a vocabulary and strategies for addressing emotional issues. The workshops on emotional poverty translate clinical research into understandings. Ruby's hope is that this workshop will give educators and other care providers the basic language for naming the emotional issues and provide strategies to address the behaviors.
