Understanding the “Why” Behind Absences
Missing school doesn’t always mean skipping school.
Many absences—especially for our youngest learners—are excused and tied to real challenges like:
🤒 Chronic illness
🧠 Mental health needs
🚍 Lack of reliable transportation
🍎 Food insecurity
In Sedro-Woolley, we want to understand, not judge. We’re working with families and partners to remove barriers so every student can get to class and stay on track.
Because when students are present, their dreams are possible. 💫

Empowering Dreams. Rooted in Community.
Staff Spotlight: Erin McMillan
This school year, Sedro-Woolley School District is embracing the theme “Empowering Dreams. Rooted in Community.” It’s about honoring the people, places, and traditions that have shaped our community for generations—and recognizing how those deep roots continue to strengthen our schools today. Just as importantly, it’s a reminder of our responsibility to help students not only discover their dreams, but also find the pathways to achieve them.
For Erin McMillan, those deep roots began in Lyman.
“I am a proud Lyman Wildcat,” she says, remembering her days at Lyman Elementary, Cascade Middle School, and Sedro-Woolley High School.
Some of her most vivid childhood memories come from classrooms filled with creativity and wonder—like Mrs. Joiner’s fifth-grade solar system unit.
“She cleared out the desks, had us sit in a circle, and used props to teach us about planet rotation, the solstices and equinoxes. Then she brought in an inflatable planetarium in the Lyman gym! That experience made me beg my parents for a telescope. I wanted to be an astronomer one day.”
Alongside inspiring teachers, community members left a lasting mark too—none more than Erin’s elementary bus driver, Mary Lou Cabe. Riding the “Woolley Bug” every day, Erin learned what community meant. Mary Lou cared deeply about her riders and their families, even building a friendship with Erin’s great-grandfather, who drove her to the bus stop each morning.
“She noticed if he wasn’t there and reached out personally when he passed. She was the first person to show me how much a caring adult can impact a child’s life.”
Today, Erin serves as the district’s Facility Rental Coordinator and brings that same sense of care and connection to her work. Returning to Sedro-Woolley after college felt natural.
“I learned there isn’t anywhere quite like Sedro-Woolley. My son now attends school here, and I want him to have the same experience I did,” she says.
Some things have changed—like Starbucks arriving in town, which Erin says she never would have believed as a high schooler. But some things remain timeless, like the tradition of each senior class painting its slogan on the grandstand.
“I love that the tradition continues. I look forward to seeing what each class comes up with.”
Janicki Fields hold a special place in Erin’s heart, with countless hours spent there for sports and community events. Loggerodeo festivities remain a favorite small-town tradition, too—something she believes sets Sedro-Woolley apart from anywhere else.
Her family’s history in Sedro-Woolley is tied to the town’s logging roots.
“My great-grandfather came here for opportunities in the logging industry and even helped build the trails at Camp Orkila,” Erin shares. That history shapes her pride in calling Sedro-Woolley home.
Her advice to students today?
“Show school pride. Do all the things! Be present in the moment. Take it all in. Some of your fondest memories will come from being a Sedro-Woolley student. There is no place in the world like it.”
For Erin, Sedro-Woolley can be summed up in three words: Home. Camaraderie. Historic. And in her work today, she continues the legacy of her family, her teachers, and her bus driver—rooted in community, and committed to helping the next generation of Cubs dream big.
How has Sedro-Woolley shaped you?
This year, the Sedro-Woolley School District is embracing the theme “Empowering Dreams. Rooted in Community.” As part of that, we're highlighting the people who have shaped—and been shaped by—our schools and community over the years. If you’ve lived in the Sedro-Woolley area for a long time, we’d love to hear your story. Whether you’re an alum, a parent, a grandparent, or someone who’s just always cheered from the sidelines, your perspective matters.
Meet our New Staff
SWHS: Math Teacher Grace Smith
Sedro-Woolley High School welcomes Grace Smith, a math teacher who also serves as Cub Crew adviser and freshman success coordinator.
Smith said she has “wanted to teach since the second grade” because she has “always enjoyed helping others learn, especially in math.”
To her, “empowering students means giving them the knowledge and resources to succeed and reach their goals. It means helping students dream big and believe that they can obtain any future they desire, and then supporting them in making that future possible.”
Smith describes herself as “friendly and supportive” and said she offers help whenever she can, making herself available before and after school and throughout the day.
“I am here for my students and set things aside to make space for them. I try to do a lot of listening,” she said.
A fun fact: Smith’s elementary school mascot was a bear, “so it’s fun to be a Cub!”
She said she is most excited “to see the growth of my past students and build positive professional relationships with my new group of students.”

Child Find Screenings
Do you have a child who has not yet started kindergarten? The Sedro-Woolley School District offers free Child Find Screenings to check your child’s growth and development. These screenings are a simple way to see how your child is learning before they begin school.
What is a Child Find Screening?
A Child Find Screening is a short and fun check of your child’s development. It looks at:
-
Large muscle development (running, jumping, climbing)
-
Fine motor skills (using scissors, drawing, eye-hand coordination)
-
Communication skills (speaking and understanding)
-
Early learning skills (basic concepts like colors and numbers)
-
Social skills (getting along with others)
-
Self-help skills (everyday independence)
Why is screening important?
The goal is to see if anything might be slowing down your child’s learning or growth. It also helps parents learn about their child’s strengths and areas that might need support. Families receive helpful ideas to use at home.
What happens during the screening?
Your child may play with blocks, draw, name colors, count, or jump. The activities are designed to be fun! Afterward, a trained professional will share the results with you and answer your questions. You might receive suggestions for home, a referral for more testing, or a plan to check again later. The whole process usually takes about 45 minutes.
Who can participate?
-
Children ages 3–5 who live within the Sedro-Woolley School District.
-
Children ages birth–2 can be referred to our partner program.
-
Families in temporary living situations can attend screenings through the district where they are staying.
How to schedule a screening:
-
Ages 3–5: Call Good Beginnings Preschool at (360) 855-3868
-
Ages birth–2: Call Skagit Preschool and Resource Center (SPARC) at (360) 416-7570
Child Find is available to all families in Washington State. If you know someone in the Sedro-Woolley community with young children, please share this opportunity with them.

- Children and youth living in emergency or transitional shelters
- Children and youth abandoned in hospitals
- Children and youth whose primary nighttime residence is not ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation (e.g. park benches, etc)
- Children and youth living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations
- Migratory children and youth living in any of the above situations
