Language & Literature
At Dobbs Ferry Middle School, we are proud to foster a community of readers who explore ideas, develop empathy, and grow as thinkers through books. As part of this commitment, our classroom and school libraries are carefully curated to provide engaging, age-appropriate, and diverse reading options for students. Each book in our classroom libraries is selected and vetted by educators to ensure it supports our academic goals, aligns with curriculum standards, and reflects a range of perspectives and voices.
We also value student choice as an important part of building lifelong readers. Students have opportunities to select books from a variety of sources — including but not limited to our school library, classroom collections, and our local Dobbs Ferry Public Library — so they can find stories and topics that inspire them. At times, students will have opportunities in their Language & Literature class to select an additional text, approved by their classroom teacher, to read alongside the core novel to enrich their learning experience. Reading choice empowers students, creates more engagement, and it also invites important conversations between school and home.
Because families know their children best, we encourage you to take an active role in guiding your child’s reading selections. If any of the topics or issues explored in a book are especially troubling or bring up difficult feelings for your child, resources are available through our counseling and support departments that may help navigate these conversations with your child. Below are some tips you can use to help you and your child choose books:
Consult trusted sources. Common Sense Media provides age-based ratings and detailed explanations of a book's content.

We believe collaboration between home and school helps ensure that every child’s reading experience is both enriching and appropriate for their individual needs.
