Hello Lincoln Community,

What a week! The cold has lifted for now and the rain has come. Monday was a teacher work day, so we had our students for four days. Yesterday we did the January fire drill. Then today (Friday) we've had a lot of fun with Spirit Day and an assembly. For Spirit Day many of us dressed up as Twins and we hope you enjoy the many twins pictures throughout this Newsletter.

At the Assembly: Today we had special guests. We honored the out-going Woodburn Fire Chief, as its his final day of service today before he retires. We also welcomed the new Fire Chief who starts his first official day in that role tomorrow, February 1st. At the assembly we also celebrated students-of-the-month, did staff shout-outs, recognized attendance award winners, and we danced--of course!

February 3 - No School: On Monday next week our Woodburn School District staff will engage in a day of professional development (PD). For Lincoln staff our learning will continue with a focus on early-literacy (K-1), math instruction (2-3), and Bridging (4-5). We'll do another round of Core Data review to inform our instructional decisions for literacy. Additionally, various Lincoln staff will do other job-specific PD and participate in job-alike professional teams, as well as other learning. With this in mind, on Monday there is no school for students.

Report Cards - Second Quarter: Our teachers have completed the 2nd quarter grade reports and we're sending them home. Please keep an eye out for your child's report card, which will likely come to you early next week.

Questions: As always, please feel free to send your questions or feedback to us at teresa.alfaro@woodburnsd.org or pmcdougal@woodburnsd.org. Go Dolphins!

Sincerely,

Teresa Alfaro - Principal

Peter McDougal - Assistant Principal

Pedestrian Safety Tips When Coming To School and Going Home

Multiple times each year we instruct and remind our students about safety on buses and during the arrival and dismissal process. We also stress the importance of being careful and safe when traveling to and from school and any time when we're out in the community. Here are some of the important points to keep in mind.

  • Walking: Using identified walking paths, obeying all traffic laws/signals, being aware of surroundings, wearing clothes that make you easily seen by cars, share your walking path with your parents so they know, keep eyes and ears open.
  • Biking: Making sure bike is correctly functioning as intended (brakes, reflectors, etc.), make sure you have proper safety gear, obey all traffic laws/signals, be aware of your surroundings, wear clothes that make you easily visible, keep eyes and ears open, use lighting at night, share your path with your parents so they know.
  • Rail Safety: Only cross at designated areas, keep eyes and ears open, be aware of your surroundings, follow all traffic laws/signals.

When Picking Up Your Student(s)

Please follow our designated traffic patterns. Here are some guidelines:

  1. Unless you're in an actual parking spot, be sure to stay in your vehicle.
  2. Similar to at an airport, we can't have unattended vehicles in the driving lanes (this includes the French Prairie MS parking lot too).
  3. Follow staff directions.
  4. Pull up to the forward-most pick up spot.
  5. Take care to always be vigilant when pulling out after picking up your student.

Ms. Castañeda and Ms. Ochoa

Next week (February 3-7) is National School Counselors week. Here at Lincoln we have two amazing school counselors, Ms. Catañeda and Ms. Ochoa who lead community meeting, teach guidance lessons, meet with students individually and in groups, and do many other things to help support our students success.

School counselors are highly educated professionals who help students succeed in school and think about their choices and their future. An integral part of the our education system, school counselors help students form healthy goals, mindsets and behaviors. With the aid of a school counselor, students learn to develop effective collaboration and cooperation skills, to practice perseverance, to develop time management and study skills, and to learn self-motivation and self-direction habits.

From the Woodburn School District

We want to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every student, family, and staff member in Woodburn School District feels safe and welcomed in our schools. We recognize that concerns about immigration policies and enforcement can create stress and fear for many in our community, and we want to assure you that our schools remain a place of safety, learning, and inclusion for all.

Every Day Matters - Focus on Attendance Every Day Matters - Focus on Attendance

zoom_out_map

This year we are continuing to pay close attention to ensuring that children are present at school regularly, because Every Day Matters.

Setting High Goals: We're focusing on attendance because last year 58% of our students were regular attenders (attended more than 90% of the days) and 42% were chronically absent (attended less than 90% of the days). The 58% was an improvement from the previous year when we had 51% of our students who were regular attenders. For the current school year our school leadership has set the goal to improve from 58% up to 70%. WE CAN DO IT!

So Important: There's a very strong correlation between good attendance and student success in school. Please see the visual below for more information.
