Principal's Corner Principal's Corner

It’s hard to believe we are entering the final stretch of the 2025–26 school year! This time of year always brings a lot of energy and excitement, with field trips, track meets, year-end activities, and some long-awaited warm weather. While there is plenty to look forward to, it is also important that we continue to stay focused in the classroom right through to June.

For our secondary students especially, this is a good opportunity to review your marks in PowerSchool and make sure you are on track for a successful finish to the year. If you are missing assignments or need extra support in a class, please connect with your teachers sooner rather than later. Regular attendance will be crucial in order to properly prepare for final exams and to finish coursework strong.

The final exam schedule can be found later in this newsletter. Students in Grades 10–12 will attend regular classes until Wednesday, June 17th, and begin exams on Thursday, June 18th. Grade 7–9 students will continue with regular classes until Friday, June 19th, and write their exams on June 22nd and 23rd.

The final month of school is filled with exciting events! Highlights include the Graduation Breakfast and the Hope Mission Walk on June 2nd. We also have our elementary track meet on June 16th. We’ll wrap up the year with our Elementary Awards Ceremony on June 24th, the last day of school. Families are invited to attend the ceremony, which will be held in the gym starting at 1:30 p.m.

We are currently finalizing our staffing plans for the 2026–27 school year and wanted to make you aware of two important changes.

First, Mr. Brannden Pastachak has decided to return home to Saskatchewan. Mr. P has been a valued and trusted member of our school community for the past eight years, and he will be tremendously missed. We wish him all the best as he returns closer to family.

As a result, we have recently hired Miss Leah Peters. She is currently teaching at CHSPS in Sedgewick and brings a strong background in Science, Humanities, and Art.

We will share a final staffing picture for the 2026–27 school year through School Messenger as soon as all of the information is available. We expect to have this update ready by early June.

There is plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks. Please check our website and social media pages to stay up to date with everything that is happening.

If you have any questions, please contact us at the office.

b) Room Rep Reports

Kindergarten (submitted by Cassidy Lindseth): Mrs. Tanton – We are clipping along in Kindergarten at a pretty good speed. Exciting things are happening in our room. We have 18 expectant parents anxiously awaiting the arrival of their bouncing beautiful baby chicks! It’s been such a long hard wait and they were certain they could see action and cracks happening a few weeks back. I had some ‘splaining to do, which is the usual every year. Every year they see action on the very first day that we put them in the incubator! How can you not love the anticipation and wonder that they experience. It fills my soul, COMPLETELY! Anyhow, our due date is Tuesday May 28th and I think we’re going to have a really great success rate this year. We incubated roughly 3.5 dozen eggs. One for every kid to take home and then some, just teasin’!

We have some fun field trips coming up in June. We are headed to the Flagstaff Regional Airport for a spectacular tour led by our very own Gr. 2 student, Dean Lindseth. Then we are headed to BRI, the Killam RCMP and a stop at the Indoor Playground in Killam. Our second field trip takes us to Camrose where we will learn the art of making pizza at BP’s, a stop at the Camrose Railway Museum and the Camrose Public Library. Those are all the exciting events to come in Kindergarten.

Grade 1 (submitted by Shannon Wasilenkoff): Mrs. Reber – Our Grade 1 students have been very busy planning our upcoming Grade 1 Market as we showcase our learning about financial literacy. The students are excited to apply what they have learned in a fun and engaging way! This will take place on June 10th, and they have decided to donate their profits to a Cancer organization this year!

In ELA, we are loving story writing and having fun creating book covers to go along with our stories. The creativity and imagination in our classroom have been wonderful to see. We are also looking forward to Campout Day on Friday! Students will learn how to make s’mores and practice writing step-by-step instructions as part of our learning activities. All is well in Grade 1, and we are loving the warm weather!

Grade 2 (submitted by Amber Erickson): Mrs. Schlaut – All is well in Grade 2! We are working really hard to complete all of our learning in each subject in the next few weeks and we're having fun finishing up specific units in each subject. Last week, the Grade 2s planted bean seeds and also each received a caterpillar in the mail. Currently we're watching them grow and change through the stages of their unique life cycles. Every morning brings excitement and learning with each of these experiments.

Reminder for parents that on Friday, June 12th we will be taking our field trip to the Reynolds Alberta Museum. Please ensure that your child's permission forms are filled out and completed online.

Grade 3 (submitted by Shyanne Lindballe): Mrs. Schmidt-Teigen – We have recently wrapped up our unit on Biographies and have begun a unit on Poetry. In Math, we are just about to finish a short unit on Telling Time. In Science, we built pinball machines in the makerspace to demonstrate forces and simple machines, which finished up our unit on Energy. In Social Studies, we are learning about the two levels of government within Alberta.

Our year-end field trip is coming up at Ellis Bird Farm, where we will get to go pond dipping, build a birdhouse, and learn about different species of wildlife in central Alberta. This will fit in well with our unit on Living Systems, and we are really looking forward to it!

Grade 4 (submitted by Kristie Nahajowich): Miss Pfeffer- Grade 4 students have been working hard as we head into the final stretch of the school year. In Language Arts, we are moving into our nonfiction unit. In Math, we are working on our measurement unit and will also be wrapping up our patterns and statistics units. In Science, we are finishing our Earth systems unit, and students have been enjoying some coding activities as we work on our computer science outcomes. We have also enjoyed spending some time learning outdoors during both poetry and science classes. In Social Studies, we are learning about some of the challenges Canada faced during Confederation. We are all looking forward to our upcoming field trip to the Ellis Nature Centre, as well as many of the exciting end-of-year activities ahead.

Grade 5 (submitted by Jenni Thomas): Mrs. Thomas/Mr. Wilson - The Grade 5s had their field trip to the Reynolds Museum yesterday and a great time was had by all. Thank you to our parent (and grandparent!) volunteers. Tomorrow we are headed out to the pond for a Weather Watcher’s program and are hoping for nice weather! In class, we are just starting our last Science unit on Living Systems and Social Unit on Citizenship. In ELA we are continuing to work on narrative writing. In Math, we are working on adding and subtracting fractions. Next, we will work on ratios before moving to the Geometry and Measurement unit.

Grade 6 (submitted by Brenda McKay): Mrs. McKay –In grade 6, we are busy preparing for our Provincial Achievement Tests. We write our first one this Friday in ELAL. Students will be given a prompt and are to write both a fiction and nonfiction piece.

We are starting our probability unit in Math, then just have one unit left: Area and Volume. We've already been doing some practice tests for the PAT.

In Science, we will be starting our last unit, Ecosystems, this week. Our field trip to Miquelon Lake on June 9 will be a great review of this unit, as we will be doing a program called Ecosystem Connectors. It is sure to be educational and fun! Students are also enjoying learning about democracy in Ancient Athens in Social Studies.

Grade 7/8 (submitted by Cristin Zimmer)- In Social, we are learning about the Aztecs and are making our own coins and in science we are working on a mechanical systems unit.

In ELA, we are getting ready to read a book called Shattered. In Math the grade 8s are getting ready for a test on probability and graphs. In home ec we are learning about how to make homemade soup. The Agriculture kids are working on planting garden beds and outdoor ed kids are learning about sketching vegetation.

Grade 9 (submitted by Alison Eshpeter): Mrs. Walker- In Science 9, we’re learning about different technologies and perspectives related to space exploration. We’ve discussed the history of astronomy, looked at the life cycle of stars, and explored technology used in space.

Mrs. Tobler- The Gr 9s are busy preparing for their Part A, Written Portion of the ELA PAT coming on Thursday! After that, they will be focusing on reading comprehension of various texts until the end of June.

Mrs. M Zimmer (Math 9) The grade 9s had their big unit test on linear relations and equations today. We have two small units left on circle geometry and statistics! They will also have a non-calculator quiz this Friday.

I said this last time too, but we have now covered all non-calculator content so we will continue lots of practice through June.

Mrs. V Zimmer- In Social 9 we are working through consumerism, marketing, and economics of Canada and the US, as well as prepping for our final presentation that will showcase all we've learned throughout the course. The students will show off their work to their families and some other classes in June!

We are in the midst of planting the garden beds in front of the school with the herbs, vegetables, fruits, and flowers that the students have researched, started, sprouted, and now are just hoping for rain!

Grade 10 (submitted by Jenni Thomas): Grade 10- Tomorrow the Grade 10s have a math test on converting measurements between Imperial and Metric measurements. In Social, they are in their last few chapters of the textbook and have a test coming up in the next week or so. Everyone is wrapping up their last courses and projects in Options. In gym, they are just starting a unit on Basketball.

Grade 11 (submitted by Carrie Carriere) – Mrs. M. Zimmer- The math 20-1 are learning about absolute value equations and reciprocal functions. They are finishing that this week, and will have completed 6/8 units.

The Math 20-2 are learning about inductive and deductive reasoning. They will finish that unit this week too and will have finished 6/8 units.

Grade 12 (submitted by Teena Kasha) Mrs. Walker- In Biology, students are preparing for the last few assessments of the genetics unit, then we have one last unit on population dynamics to finish up the course. In this unit, we will take a look at how populations change over time. The Biology 30 Diploma is Thursday, June 18th which is just around the corner, so students may want to start getting their notes and other resources organized for studying. In Chemistry, students are working on the last unit about acid-base equilibrium systems. We will look at how to classify substances as acids or bases, how to calculate concentrations or pH, and how to predict changes in equilibrium systems. The Chemistry 30 diploma is Friday, June 19th right after the Biology one, so students that are enrolled in both should take a look at Mrs. Walker's study plans on Classroom to plan out how and when they will study for their tests.

Mr. P- In Social 30, students have been reading our second and final novel of the semester, It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis. The novel explores the rise of authoritarianism in the USA and challenges students to think critically about democracy, propaganda, political power, and the rejection of liberal values, making it highly relevant to the Social 30 curriculum and Related Issue 2: To what extent is the rejection of liberalism justified?

Students will be having a 40 question multiple-choice test on Friday covering concepts discussed throughout Related Learning Outcome 2, including ideologies that reject liberalism, authoritarian governments, and methods used to maintain control and power, as well as questions related to the novel’s major themes, quotations, characters, and events.
