Dear Aspen Elementary Community,

At Aspen Elementary School, our mission is to empower an innovative, mindful community of learners in a challenging and nurturing environment that promotes inquiry and academic excellence. As an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) school, our educational framework shapes how we teach, how students learn, and how we foster compassionate, curious global citizens.

Whether you are new to the PYP or looking for deeper ways to connect with your child's school experience, we are excited to share what makes our program special and how you can bring inquiry to life at home.

What Does the IB Primary Years Programme Entail?

The PYP is a student-centered, inquiry-driven framework designed for primary learners. Rather than passive receivers of information, PYP students are active participants who build voice, choice, and ownership over their learning journey.

Key pillars of our PYP curriculum include:

  • Inquiry-Based Learning: Learning begins with curiosity. Students ask big questions, research real-world issues, think critically, and reflect on their growth.

  • Transdisciplinary Units: Subjects like reading, writing, math, science, and social studies are integrated into six overarching themes (such as Who We Are, How We Express Ourselves, and Sharing the Planet). This helps students understand how classroom learning connects to the broader world.

  • The IB Learner Profile: We cultivate 10 human attributes in every child—encouraging them to be Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective.

  • Approaches to Learning (ATL): Beyond subject matter, we explicitly teach five sets of essential skills: Thinking, Social, Communication, Self-Management, and Research.

  • Student Agency & Action: Meaningful learning leads to action. We encourage students to apply what they learn by making positive choices and taking action at school, at home, and in our local community.

How Families Can Support PYP Learning at Home

Your partnership is essential to your child's ongoing growth and success. You do not need to be an IB expert to support inquiry at home! Here are five practical strategies for weaving PYP values into everyday family routines:

Use Learner Profile Words

Notice and praise moments when your child demonstrates traits like being principled, open-minded, or showing self-management.

Inquiry & Concepts: Ask Open-Ended Questions

Ask your child about their current Central Idea or unit of inquiry. Have them explain how or why something works.

Real-World Connections: Explore Ideas Together

Connect classroom topics to daily life, nature walks, museum visits, or conversations about current local events.

Student Action: Encourage Problem Solving

Celebrate when your child takes initiative—such as helping a neighbor, caring for the environment, or resolving a conflict.

Foundational Habits: Daily Practice & Reflection

Read together 20–30 minutes nightly, play screen-free math games, and reflect on daily challenges.

Staying Connected

We encourage you to look out for updates in our newsletter, connect with your child's teacher on Toddle, and join us for upcoming PYP Parent Information Sessions throughout the year.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we guide our students to become active, compassionate, lifelong learners.

Warmly,

Ashley Bodkins, Principal

K-4 Spanish with Maestra Emily:

As we jump into our school year routines and units of inquiry, las clases have been filled with social, self-management, and risk taking communication practices by our open-minded, risk-taking students! Students have been challenging themselves with their thinking and communication skills to participate in using the Spanish language in meaningful ways. Let’s take a look at how we have been connecting to the grade level PYP units of inquiry and transdisciplinary themes: Click HERE for more information!

4th Grade French students are focusing on the following Target Vocabulary & Structures that align with their first PYP Unit: Governing Structures (How We Organize Ourselves). They are learning how to communicate about their daily routines in French, and to tell what time certain activities take place! They wrap up the unit near the beginning of October by investigating how to achieve balance through healthy choices and how to communicate this in French.

A note from the Nurses...

  • Please keep your students home if they are sick! They should be free of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea for at least 24 hours without the use of medication, and symptoms should be improved before returning to school.
  • Friendly reminder: Per school policy, all medications including prescription, over-the-counter, creams, and cough drops require a physician’s order signed by a parent or guardian before administration. Medications must be delivered directly to the health office by a parent or guardian. Students may not transport or self-carry medications. When in doubt, please contact the health office for clarification.

Thank you for caring about the health of your students and our school community.

Smile for Students in Kindergarten - 3rd Grade

  • Your student/s should have come home this week with paperwork in their backpacks. We are excited to share information about the Smiles for Students initiative, brought to Aspen Schools through Garfield County Public Health and the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Smiles for Students provides preventative dental care directly in schools at no out-of-pocket cost to families. This program is available to students who currently have a dentist as well as those who may not have regular dental care.

What Does the Program Include?

Students participating in the program will receive licensed dental services at school, including:

  • Dental exams twice per year, including an oral examination and cleaning
  • Fluoride varnish to help prevent cavities
  • Dental sealants to protect teeth from decay
  • Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), when appropriate, which is painted or applied to areas of decay to help stop and block the progression of cavities without drilling or numbing

By providing these services at school, the program helps reduce the need for families to schedule additional dental appointments, helps prevent students from missing valuable instructional time, and can help parents avoid missing work for routine preventative dental visits.

Who Can Participate?

The Smiles for Students program will follow participating students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade for three years, providing ongoing preventative dental care throughout the program.

As part of enrollment, families will be asked about their child's dental insurance coverage. Only Medicaid/CHP+ information will be requested, and families will not incur any out-of-pocket expenses for services provided through this program.

We hope this opportunity will make preventative dental care more accessible and convenient for our students and families.

If you have additional questions about the Smiles for Students initiative, please contact:

Carrie Godes, Program Provider
970-665-6385

You may also stop by the Aspen School Health Office and speak with Robin Strecker or Feira Lupini.

Digital Wellness at AES

Are you concerned about your child's digital wellness? The Digital Wellness Coalition began in January 2026 to address these concerns from a community wide lens. Interested in getting involved or learning more, reach out to Mary Bloom ( dwc.roaringfork@gmail.com ) and keep an eye out for more information.

Coming soon... AES Digital Commitments and Guidance for Families

Check out these policies which support digital wellness at school:

AES Personal Device Policy

School Bus Electronic Device Policy

We know many families are thinking carefully about when to introduce personal devices. We encourage you to consider joining the Wait Until 8th pledge, which supports delaying smartphones and social media access until at least 8th grade. This helps students build strong social skills, independence, and healthy habits before navigating the digital world more fully.

Here is a social story, "My Device Stays in my Backpack," (English and Spanish) you can share with your child at home to support our commitment to a focused, safe and engaging learning environment.

Fall Art Break: Bugs and Birds: Life Below and Above!
October 12 - 16, 9AM-3PM
$75 per day or $375 for the entire week

From the tiniest beetle tunneling underground to the highest hawk circling overhead, this week takes young artists on a journey through every layer of life on Earth. We start low, sculpting clay bugs and building tiny dioramas of the hidden world beneath the rug, in the dirt, and under fallen logs. Then we climb upward, painting layered skyscapes and crafting birds, bats, and bugs that take to the air. Along the way, we study real creatures- their shapes, colors, and camouflage – and use them as inspiration for our own imaginative critters. By the end of the week, we’ve built a whole ecosystem of artwork from the ground up to the clouds!

Healthy Choices for Celebrations

From birthday to holiday parties throughout the school year, children, teachers, and families have numerous reasons to celebrate. Celebrations are a great way for children to feel part of the school community, where the learning environment is made festive and where everyone can come together to enjoy a break from the routine. Parties often center around food, such as cupcakes, cookies, candy, chips and sugary beverages. While these foods, in moderation, can be part of a healthy, well-balanced diet, these unhealthy choices have almost become daily norms in the classroom, rather than exceptions. Aspen School District staff are encouraged to promote school celebrations with healthy treats or non-food items which are recommended by the CDC's Healthy Schools program.

Alternatives include: stickers, pencils, extra recess, dance party, cards, star student etc.
