Curriculum Connection
April 2022
Curriculum & Instruction
Kinder Camp
The Kinder Camp is a 4-week summer learning experience for rising Kindergarten students who did not attend an MSCS PreK program and current MSCS PreK students. The purpose of the program is to engage incoming Kindergarten students with the basic early literacy skills needed to help ensure readiness for the rigor and demands of the Kindergarten standards and curriculum. Student reading development is largely dependent upon their understanding of the alphabetic principle; therefore, Kinder Campers will engage in instruction and activities centered on the idea that letters and letter patterns represent the sounds of spoken language. The Kinder Camps will be hosted in 20 select MSCS elementary or K-8 schools in “high-needs” areas of the city and serve 800 students. Instruction will be provided by 40 teachers and SEAs.

Did you know that data from the district CFAs can be compared with the data from your formative assessments, within your MasteryConnect Trackers? The Tracker is a great tool that provides a comparison and the ability to see discrepancies between the formative data and the district benchmark data, to assist teachers in evaluating the impact of instruction.
Pre-Filled Districtwide PLC Protocols and Annotated PBOs
Pre-Filled Districtwide PLC Protocols and supporting Annotated PBOs for the weeks of May 2 – May 23 are now available for Grades K-8, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 in the Curricular Initiatives folder on the 2021-2022 Curriculum Maps SharePoint.
Supporting Blended Learning
On March 30, Mr. Ellis and his team led their PLC groups through the re-delivery of how to implement the Blended Learning Station Rotation Model. This lively team provided a fantastic presentation of the re-delivery. The team took it a step further and provided a school-specific handout of the station rotation model embedded in the district-provided PLC protocols to help support teachers.
Mr. Clayton's suggestion of using the QR code for Clever login will be a game-changer for teachers and students and he is sharing the steps to create the QR codes with us here.
KUDOS to the Blended Learning Implementation Team and the Sherwood Ace Archers for exuding high levels of success with integrating the Blended Learning Station Rotation Model in your classrooms.

Closing Circulation for Library Inventory
An accurate physical inventory must be made of all materials in the library. To facilitate this process, all books and materials should be returned to the library to be shelved for inventory by May 13. Principals should work with their Library Information Specialist (LIS) to ensure adequate time to perform a complete and accurate inventory. Library Services recommends that during the week of May 16-20, the LIS be free from a full schedule, limiting the time the LIS is required to supervise students. If the LIS has additional year-end responsibilities (textbook inventory, equipment inventory, etc.) to complete, it is recommended that the schedule be adjusted accordingly to allow the LIS ample time to complete all tasks in an accurate and timely manner. This request does not preclude continued use of the library by individuals or groups for special projects, completion of the year's work, or the use of reference materials, magazines, or books within the library.
During the week of May 23-27, the library should be closed to all scheduled activities to allow the LIS time to focus on completing the inventory and submitting required reports to Library Services. Libraries should be left in condition to reopen at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year or for summer school if your school is a summer school site. Scheduling for the library opening in the fall is the principal's responsibility while working with the LIS and considering any special situation at the school. Your cooperation regarding these matters is greatly appreciated. Please contact Library Services with any questions.
