Proviso East HighSchool Newsletter

🎉Congratulations, Proviso East!! 🎉 🎉Congratulations, Proviso East!! 🎉

zoom_out_map
We are thrilled to announce that Proviso East High School has achieved a Commendable rating for the first time since the Illinois State Board of Education began evaluating schools in 2018. This recognition, part of the newly released 2024 Illinois Report Card, reflects the dedication and progress of our entire Proviso East community.

Our administrative team, staff, teachers, students, and parents have all collaborated to make this achievement possible, and we are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together! The report card reveals that Proviso East has made significant progress in key academic indicators. Our English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency increased by 5%, math by 2%, and science proficiency saw a remarkable 14% rise. Additionally, our graduation rate improved by 2%, while chronic absenteeism decreased by 8%, demonstrating that our students are more engaged and excelling like never before.

A huge thank you goes to our Principal, Mr. Hull, along with the administration team, staff, students, and parents. Our collective efforts have helped Proviso East advance from the bottom 5% of Illinois schools to the 47th percentile. We have progressed from an Intensive Support rating to a Targeted rating in 2022, and now we have reached Commendable. This advancement reflects the strong leadership of our school, our focus on building solid academic foundations, improving attendance, and maintaining high standards for every student.

In recognition of this accomplishment, Mayor Booker of Maywood generously sponsored a celebratory breakfast with school administration to honor this milestone and discuss ways to further support our school community. We will continue to celebrate this remarkable achievement on November 8th with a pep rally. It will be an opportunity for our entire school family to come together, acknowledge our progress, and look forward to an even brighter future! For a closer look at Proviso East's progress, you can view the full Illinois Report Card at www.illinoisreportcard.com.

Why Community Service?

The number of high school students involved in community service programs has risen from 81,000 in 1984 to nearly 3 million in 1997 (National Service Clearinghouse). Community service programs are being implemented to help counteract the sense of isolation that many experts attribute to the growing amount of violence in schools. Most schools with community service learning cite strengthening relationships among students, the school, and the community as key reasons for doing community service. Community service has long been viewed as a possible means of improving education. John Dewey, an advocate of service learning, believed that students would learn more effectively and become better citizens if they engaged in service to the community.

Help Us Keep Our School Community Healthy Help Us Keep Our School Community Healthy

zoom_out_map

As we journey through the school year together, the health and safety of our students, staff, and community truly remain our top priority! To keep our school environment a safe and healthy place for everyone, we kindly ask for your help with the following:

If your child is feeling unwell or showing any signs of contagious illnesses—like strep throat, COVID-19, the flu, or similar ailments—please keep them at home. Some common symptoms to watch for include:

- Fever

- Sore throat

- Persistent cough

- Shortness of breath

- Runny or stuffy nose

- Fatigue or muscle aches

- Headache

- Loss of taste or smell

- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

By keeping your child at home when they are feeling under the weather, you’re playing a vital role in helping us prevent the spread of illnesses and ensuring the well-being of all our students and staff.

Attendance Matters While it's essential to prioritize health and keep sick children at home, we also want to highlight the importance of regular attendance when your child is feeling well. Consistent attendance is key to your child's academic success—each day builds on the last! Frequent absences can make it tough for students to keep up with their classwork, stay engaged in their learning, and develop the important social skills that are crucial during these formative years.

We are dedicated to creating a safe, supportive, and enriching learning environment for all our students. With your help, we can successfully balance the need for safety with the importance of regular attendance. If your student will be absent, please make sure to communicate with our Attendance Office and their teachers.

Important Reminder

Just a friendly reminder to our new upperclassmen: please submit your physicals along with immunization records, dental, and vision exams using the state-mandated forms (not sports physicals). It’s also important for all students aged 16 and older to get their second meningitis vaccine and provide proof to the Health Center. Please ensure all documents are turned in promptly!

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Ms. Northern, our school nurse! She’s available from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM during the school week and can be contacted at Ext: 1797 or via email at knorthern@pths209.org.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school community healthy and thriving!

🎉¡Felicitaciones, Proviso East! 🎉 🎉¡Felicitaciones, Proviso East! 🎉

Ayúdenos a mantener saludable a nuestra comunidad escolar Ayúdenos a mantener saludable a nuestra comunidad escolar
