OCTOBER 2026
Message from the BOE President
It is hard to believe that we are already back here for another school year. After a busy summer, there is something especially exciting about seeing our schools come back to life — the buses on the roads, the teachers back in their classrooms, and most importantly, our students walking through the doors.
There is always a different energy when our kids return. They bring our schools to life, and tonight is a great opportunity to celebrate the beginning of another school year in West Deptford.
I want to welcome all of our students and families back. To our students, I hope this is a year filled with learning, new experiences, friendships, and opportunities to discover something you didn't know you could do. To our parents and guardians, thank you for trusting us with your children and for being such an important part of their education.
And to our teachers, administrators, support staff, custodians, transportation teams, food service staff, and everyone who worked throughout the summer to prepare our schools — thank you. A successful opening day doesn't happen by accident. There are countless people working behind the scenes to make sure our buildings are ready, our classrooms are prepared, and our students are welcomed back safely. We appreciate everything you do.
This is also an exciting time for the West Deptford School District because we have a lot happening. We are continuing the important work associated with our referendum and the improvements it will bring to our schools. We are moving forward with our early childhood initiatives and continuing to look at how we can provide our youngest learners with the strongest possible start. We are focused on academic achievement, student support, staffing, fiscal responsibility, and making sure we are preparing our students not just for the next grade level, but for whatever comes after West Deptford.
At the same time, we know that progress is about more than buildings and programs. It is about people:
It is about a teacher who recognizes that a student needs a little extra encouragement.
It is about a coach who teaches lessons that go far beyond the playing field.
It is about a counselor who takes the time to listen.
It is about a bus driver who gets our kids to school safely every morning.
And it is about a community that believes our children deserve every opportunity to succeed.
As a Board, our responsibility is to continue listening, asking questions, making thoughtful decisions, and keeping students at the center of everything we do.
We don't take that responsibility lightly.
There will always be challenges. Every school district has them. But I am incredibly optimistic about where West Deptford is headed. We have a tremendous community, dedicated educators and staff, engaged families, and students who continue to give us plenty to be proud of.
As we begin this new school year, I think it is important that we take a moment to appreciate where we are — and to be excited about where we're going.
Welcome back, West Deptford.

West Deptford Family Fun Day
West Deptford School District once again had a booth at our Annual WD Family Fun Day on September 19. It was a beautiful day, and district staff had the chance to speak to many members of our community. Status updates were provided on our referendum projects and timelines, our new preschool building was spotlighted, and we had fun giveaways from the district and Chartwells.
WDHS Frosh Fest
We had such a great time welcoming the WDHS Class of 2030 and their families at Frosh Fest...the energy throughout the building was exactly what we hoped for!
Over 140 families attended and it was a packed house, to say the least! Our incoming freshman had the opportunity to learn more about their new school, meet some of the people who make it special and see all the different ways they can get involved over the next four years!
A huge thank you to our staff, coaches, advisors, student-athletes, club members, marching band, cheerleaders and everyone else who helped make the night such a success!
Football, Honor, and Remembrance
On 9/11, our WDHS Football team hosted Paulsboro in the Mayor's Trophy Game. Special thanks to our Township Officials who were in attendance to present Player of the Game plaques to Zamir Davis of West Deptford and Jeremiah Carr of Paulsboro. It concluded as a shutout game for the WD Eagles.
The evening held special significance as the community marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. A bronze eagle was unveiled in memory of 1997 West Deptford graduate Nick Brandemarti, his #44 jersey was retired, and the football field was named "Clyde Folsom Field" in honor of Coach Folsom and his instrumental role in building the West Deptford football program. It truly was a special and touching evening for our community!
Celebrating WDHS Field Hockey - Past and Present!
What an awesome day for West Deptford Field Hockey! Not only did the girls pick up a 3-0 victory, but we honored Coach with the dedication of Coach Linda Decker Field, welcomed back our 1996 Group III State Championship team, and celebrated our seniors, Julia and Kayleigh!

Notes from the Nurses
WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL FROM THE SCHOOL NURSES
The district nurses would like to welcome you back to school and extend a warm welcome to all of our new West Deptford families this year. We will be working hard with your assistance to meet the health needs of your child. In doing so, we would like to share some important information with you.
We cannot stress enough how essential it is for us to have immediate, updated medical information for your child. As things change throughout the school year, please contact your child’s Health Office with any updates. This is especially crucial if there is a change in phone numbers for you or other emergency contacts.
We would like to remind you of our district policies related to medications. Medications must be brought to the Health Office by a parent, guardian or other adult. Students are not allowed to bring in their own medication or self-carry medication, unless their respective school nurse has orders directly from the physician designating self-administration as applicable by our district policies. A written doctor’s order and medication form signed by a parent or guardian must accompany all medication and new prescriptions and forms for medications are required each new school year. Additionally, all medications, even over the counter, must be labeled and in an original, sealed pharmacy package. Please refer to your respective school nurse’s page for printable medication forms for food allergies, asthma, seizures, daily and as needed medications, etc. (Printable Forms - West Deptford School District).
If your child is suffering from a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or any other contagious illness, please keep them home. It is the school district policy that a student should remain home for at least 24 hours after symptoms and fevers have cleared up. For an absence of 3 or more days, students should return with a doctor’s note. If you are in need of further guidance, please contact your school nurse.
Student health screenings are performed every school year. Height, weight, blood pressure, vision and hearing will be checked as per the New Jersey required school mandates. Parents and guardians will be informed of any concerns noted during the screenings. Please follow up promptly should we issue any referrals. Academics can be greatly impacted if your child is struggling with vision or hearing.
We are looking forward to a happy, healthy school year for all of our students! Please feel free to reach out to us at any time!

COMMUNITY FLU FACTS AND PREVENTION TIPS FROM THE SCHOOL NURSES
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.
Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
fever* or feeling feverish/chills–*not everyone with the flu will have a fever
cough
sore throat
runny or stuffy nose
muscle or body aches
headaches
fatigue (tiredness)
some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might get flu by touching a surface or object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or possibly their eyes.
You may be able to spread the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as when you are sick with symptoms. The time from when a person is exposed and infected with the flu to when symptoms begin is about two days, but can range from about one to four days. Complications of the flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.
The first and most important step in preventing the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. Flu vaccine has been shown to reduce flu related illnesses and the risk of serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization or even death. You are encouraged to see your healthcare provider for a flu vaccination, however, the Gloucester County Health Department schedules flu shot clinics every flu season. Please visit this link to find a location to receive a free flu shot for your family this fall.
Everyday preventive actions such as staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and frequent handwashing help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu. Please keep your child home should they be displaying any signs and symptoms of illness. Let’s all do our part to keep our community healthy!
WD Schools Celebrate National School Lunch Week!
National School Lunch Week 2026 was celebrated from October 12–16, 2026, with the official theme "Cafeteria Circus: Where Nutrition Takes Center Stage!" (celebrating the balance, energy, and dedication of school nutrition staff who juggle regulations, timelines, and student preferences). The elementary school cafeteria staff decorated their cafeterias to go with the circus theme. The staff went all out, dressing up in character, and the cafeterias looked absolutely amazing!
