Vex Robotics 5th and 6th Grade

Dear 5th and 6th grade parents & guardians,

Stewart Elementary provides an after-school VEX robotics team that is open to 5th and 6th graders interested in building and operating robots. (VEX Robotics is a program that uses snap-together pieces to build robots.) The team will meet every Monday from October 19 through December 7 from 3:30 to 4:30 in room #16 (which is directly across from Mrs. Hatch's room.)

A few things to keep in mind:

Build instructions are provided, so students don’t have to start from scratch.
Prior robotics experience is not required.
Cost is $20 payable on myDSD.

Complete the application by clicking the following link if your 5th or 6th grader is interested in participating. Applications are due next Monday, 10/5. On Friday, 10/9, I will email everyone who applies to let them know who is on the team. We can only accommodate about 25 students in this program. If applications exceed the available spots or robotics kits, priority will be given to 6th graders and those who sign up soonest.

Application link: Stewart Robotics 2026-27 – Fill out form

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hatch

Davis School District announces 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. speech contest

Davis School District students are invited to participate in the 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. Speech Contest, an opportunity for students to study the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and share a portion of one of his speeches through public speaking.

The contest is open to all students, with separate grade-level categories for each division.

Elementary Speech Contest

Elementary students will compete in three categories:

Elementary K-2
Elementary 3-4
Elementary 5-6

Each school may submit one student per category.

Secondary Speech Contest

Secondary students will compete in two categories:

Junior High, grades 7-9
Senior High, grades 10-12

Each school may submit one student per category.

Speech Requirements

Students should select any portion or excerpt from a single Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speech as the focus of their presentation.

Speeches must be:

At least one minute long
No more than three minutes long
Presented in English or another language

Students presenting in a language other than English, please contact Holly Decarolis at hdecarolis@dsdmail.net.

Important Dates

The district due date for speech contest entries is Nov. 2, 2026.

District judging will take place Nov. 16-17, 2026.

Prizes

Students will compete for prizes in each category:

First place: $100
Second place: $75
Third place: $50

Prizes are awarded per category.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Speech Contest gives Davis School District students an opportunity to engage with the powerful words and ideas of Dr. King while developing their public speaking skills. Through studying and presenting excerpts from his speeches, students can reflect on messages of freedom and share those ideas with their school and district community.

6th Grade Sharp Survey

Between October 1–30, Stewart Elementary will administer the Student Health and Risk Prevention (SHARP) Survey to students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12. SHARP has given us insight into what our students are facing for more than 20 years, helping parents know what to talk about with their kids and helping schools, health departments, and community partners better support students.

Only students whose parents gave consent earlier this year, during the registration processes, will take part. Participation is voluntary, students may skip questions or stop at any time without penalty. All responses are anonymous and confidential. Questions? Contact [School Office/Contact], or visit the district's Assessment & Surveys page. For SHARP FAQs and statewide results, visit sumh.utah.gov/data-reports/sharp-survey.

Save Your Pull Tabs

Way to go, Stewart Stars! A huge THANK YOU to our amazing Stewart families and students for donating pull tabs to the Ronald McDonald House. Ms Yoho had the opportunity to deliver your generous donation, and they were so grateful for your support!

The pull tabs are recycled, and the recycling company matches the donation to help provide meals and other support for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House during difficult times. This kindness truly makes a difference.

Now let’s set a new goal… Can we fill TWO tubs this year? Keep those pull tabs coming, Stewart Stars! Together, we can Make It Matter!
