WISD Lice Notification WISD Lice Notification

There is a case of lice in a few of our classrooms. The following Instructions on treatment and answers to common questions are to help our families get rid of lice at school and home.

WISD teachers and administrators work to eradicate lice at school as part of our routine procedures.

What are the signs and symptoms?

People with head lice usually have severe itching. Lice or their shiny grayish white eggs or nits are visible on the affected scalp.

How can you help?

Parents/Guardians are our number one partner in stopping the spread of lice by looking for signs and symptoms, and treating their children until they are completely clear of lice.

How do lice spread?

Lice primarily spread with head-to-head contact and while less likely, from sharing clothing or belongings.

What is the best way to get rid of lice on my child?

Treat the affected scalp with shampoos or cream rinses approved by the FDA that can be purchased without a prescription at a drug or grocery store. After the first treatment, you may not see live lice, but you might see nits—comb out these lice eggs with a special nit comb. A second treatment and combing are necessary. For more information, visit: https://dshs.texas.gov/schoolhealth/lice.shtm?terms=lice

Is it safe to use fumigant sprays on an affected scalp?

No, this is never recommended. Fumigants can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.

What is the truth about lice?

Lice can not hop or jump from one head to another—they can only crawl and are spread by sustained direct contact. Lice are not a sign of filth—in fact, they are often found on children with very clean homes and hair.

  • Lice do not spread disease and are not considered a health hazard.

  • Avoid head-to-head contact during play, activities at home, school and elsewhere

  • Do not share hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair accessories, combs, brushes or towels. Disinfest combs and brushes used by an infested person by soaking them in hot water (at least 130°F) for 5–10 minutes.

  • Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with a person who has lice.

  • Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items worn or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130°F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle. Seal items in a plastic bag and store for 2 weeks if they are not washable.

  • Vacuum the floor and furniture.

  • Where can I find out more information?

Fantastic Teeth Fan Club Building Bright Smiles Across Texas

Did you know that tooth decay is the most chronic disease among school-age children? It’s true! But with the help of the Fantastic Teeth Fan Club, we can change that. This incredible program, created by Masonic Children & Family Services of Texas (MCFS), empowers children and parents to take control of their oral health, preventing painful problems and expensive treatments.

We have partnered with MCFS through the fantatic teeth fan club to bring education about keeping our teeth healthy and toothbrushes for all of our students.

MCFS focuses on helping Texas residents experiencing financial challenges. Eligibility for assistance is determined on a case-by-case basis. If you or someone you know could benefit from our services, please reach out:
