OCTOBER
Message from Principal Branch:
October Principal Corner: Welcome to the HIVE!
October is here, and we are off to a busy and exciting start at Garden City! As we continue building our school community, my goal is simple: Every student and every family should feel welcomed, valued, and connected to our Garden City Bee Hive.
Whether your family has been part of Garden City for years or you are joining us for the first time, you belong here! We are committed to building strong relationships, celebrating our differences, and creating a school where every voice matters.
Our theme, Every Voice. Every Day., reminds us that belonging is more than being present. It means being seen, heard, respected, and included.
Living Our HIVE Expectations:
At Garden City, our HIVE expectations help students make positive choices, build relationships, and take responsibility for their actions.
We encourage families to review these expectations at home:
H: Help each other
I: Improve every day
V: Value and respect our school
E: Engage in responsible choices
Ask your child how they demonstrated a HIVE expectation this week! When home and school reinforce the same positive messages, our students benefit.
Recess and Lunch: Growing Together
We are continuing to strengthen routines and expectations during recess and lunch. These are important times for students to build friendships, practice social skills, and enjoy being part of our school community.
Our staff are reinforcing safe play, respectful communication, inclusion, and responsible choices. We are also helping students learn how to resolve conflicts, repair harm, and include others.
Families can help by talking with their children about being kind, inviting others to play, and solving disagreements respectfully. Together, we can make recess and lunch positive experiences for every student.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month:
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 through October 15. The celebration began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded to a month in 1988.
September 15 was chosen because it marks the independence anniversaries of several Central American countries. The month honors the histories, cultures, achievements, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.
At Garden City, we are proud of the many cultures, languages, and traditions that make our community special. We look forward to celebrating the heritage and contributions of our Hispanic and Latino students, families, and community members.
Watch for more information about how we will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at Garden City!
Fall Fun at Garden City:
We have lots of exciting activities coming up, including our Trunk or Treat celebration! Events like these are wonderful opportunities for students, families, and staff to connect, have fun, and strengthen our school community.
We hope families will join us whenever possible. Whether you attend an event, volunteer, or connect with your child's teacher, your involvement makes our HIVE stronger.
Watch for more details about upcoming events!
Holding Space with the Principal:
Oct 30
Friday
Beginning this October, I will offer monthly open office hours called Holding Space with the Principal.
Last Friday of each month, 8:30β10:00 a.m.
This is an opportunity for families to connect with me, share ideas, ask questions, celebrate successes, or discuss concerns. I especially want to hear from families whose voices may not always be represented in school conversations.
No formal agenda is needed. My goal is to listen, learn, and strengthen our partnership.
If you would like to meet, please contact Mrs. Pettis to schedule a time.
Together, We Make the HIVE Stronger
Thank you for the trust you place in us each day. We know that a strong school community is built through relationships, consistency, and a shared commitment to every child.
I am excited about the year ahead and all the ways we will continue to grow together.
Warmly,
David Branch

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT NEWS:
October Is Full of Excitement!
Garden City families, we are off to a great start, and we are just getting started! We have some exciting family engagement opportunities coming up, and we cannot wait to celebrate, learn, laugh, and connect with each of you.
π¬ Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration β October 14
We are excited and honored to have the opportunity to co-host our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with the Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC)!
Join us for a special Family Movie Night featuring Nuestro Norte, a film created with the voices and stories of Minnesota locals. We will also have local speakers who were involved in and connected to the making of the film, giving our families an opportunity to hear directly from members of our community.
This will be more than just a movie night. It will be an evening filled with history, culture, community, and conversation β and you definitely don't want to miss it!

π After school
π Garden City Elementary
Come enjoy the movie, learn something new, grab some snacks, and spend an evening celebrating the rich cultures and stories that make our Garden City community so special.
π Trunk-or-Treat β October 29
Then we are getting spooky! π»
Our annual Trunk-or-Treat is coming up on October 29, and we are bringing the fun right into our school parking lot. Keeping the event on school grounds helps create a safe, familiar, and welcoming environment for our students and families.
And let's be honest... this may be your one opportunity to see your teachers dressed up in funny, spooky, and sometimes questionable costumes while handing out candy.
Yes, you read that correctly. π
The people who spend all year reminding students that "we don't have candy at school" will be the very same people passing it out at Trunk-or-Treat. On October 29, that rule doesn't apply! ππ¬
So bring the family, put on your favorite costume, and come celebrate with us!
β€οΈ We Need Our Garden City Families!
This year is already off to an amazing start, and we want to keep the momentum going! Family engagement works best when we all come together β families, students, staff, and community partners.
I am still accepting volunteer sign-ups and will be reaching out to those who have expressed interest in volunteering with upcoming opportunities. Please keep an eye on your email for information about volunteer opportunities and ways you can help support our events.
Also, be on the lookout for three different flyers coming home with information about upcoming after-school opportunities for students in grades 1β5. There are some great opportunities coming up, so please take a look when those flyers make their way home!
We cannot wait to see you at our October events. Come out, bring the family, and let's continue building a Garden City community where every voice matters and every family feels like they belong.
We can't wait to celebrate with you! ππ

π± Student Cell Phones/Devices at School:
Student Cell Phones/Electronic Devices at School:
Student cell phones should be left at home. If you choose to send your child to school with a cell phone, please keep the following in mind:
- The school and district are not responsible for replacing damaged, lost, or stolen cell phones or electronic devices.
- Students that bring cell phones need to keep them in secured backpacks. With Principal approval, students may leave drop their cell phone in the main office at arrival and pick up before dismissal.
- Students cannot use them to access social media, taking pictures, or videos during school hours or on the bus.
- Electronic Devices being inappropriately used at school will be collected by staff and returned the student at the end of day. If it becomes a repeated interruption to learning, a family member may be asked to come to school.
All students have access to district devices while at school, so cell phones are not needed or required for instruction. If you have any questions, concerns, or situations that require your student to have a cell phone at school, please contact Principal Branch.

FAMILY NUMBERS
Here at Garden City ALL families are assigned a specific Family Number. This number will be your family's unique assigned number for as long as your student(s) attend Garden City. You get 1 car hanging tag at the beginning of the school year (Open House), or upon enrollment and starting with us. These are important to have and know, as they are used for parent pick ups, during breakfast/lunch, and many other times during the school year.
If you lose or misplace your family number, just write your family number down on a piece of paper. Unfortunately, we do not have additional hanging tags to distribute.
Again, please note that these should hang VISIBLY from your car when going through the family pick-up line at the end of the day.
MEALS & ACCOUNTS
One breakfast and one lunch per day are free for all students in Minnesota. If students bring a lunch from home and wish to have school milk, they must purchase one for $0.50 using their SmartSchoolK12 lunch account. Once youβve created this account, you can log in and add money to your childβs meal account. Balances are shared by all students in a household. To load your studentβs lunch account, view menus, apply for free/reduced lunch, etc., click the button below to create a SmartSchoolK12 account.
