MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Franklin Students and Families,

Welcome Back to School! It's been wonderful seeing you all back in the building. We are so excited about the new school year! Already there is a lot going on. Tonight we are hosting a football jamboree and tomorrow we are hosting a volleyball tournament. There are several fall sports competitions happening next week. Check Trivory for dates and times. Come out to cheer on the Lightning! Also, the first Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) meeting of the school year is on Wednesday, September 10th at 6:30pm and Back to School Night is on Wednesday, September 17th at 6pm. We hope to see you there!

Thank you students for using your Yondr pouch this week! We are seeing an increase in student engagement and discussions in classes only after 3 days. Make sure to bring your Yondr pouch to lock your phone inside each day. As you know they will not be unlocked at lunch time. Make plans with your friends for lunch ahead of time. We are happy to share that breakfast and lunch are free again this year for all students at all PPS schools. We had a Cell Phone Family Info Night yesterday and shared information from this slide deck. Please review it and reach out to Vice Principal Amy Gervais, agervais@pps.net with any questions.

We are here to help and problem solve. Let us know if you have any questions.

Have a wonderful three day weekend! See you all on Tuesday.

Thank you,

Dr. Z

SCHOOL INFORMATION SCHOOL INFORMATION

NEW: Important Drop-Off and Pick-Up Guidelines

Franklin families, if you drive your students to and from school, please pay very close attention and be very cautious! Woodward gets extremely congested with cars and pedestrians in the mornings and afternoons. Please remember that students are NOT to be dropped off or picked up in the staff parking lots; we suggest that you find a spot about a block away that you consistently use for dropping off and picking up. It will cause you less stress and it will help with congestion and make it safer for students arriving on foot. Thank you!

NEW: Meet the School Nurse!

Hi all! I'm Katie (they/them), the new school nurse at Franklin. The best way to contact me is by email at ksimeon@pps.net or by phone 503-916-5140, ext. 84352. As we get settled in, this is a reminder that if a student has a medical need or takes medication during the school day, including emergency medication, there are necessary forms to fill out. If you have access to a printer, you can find the forms here and bring them in. I'm excited for a great school year and looking forward to meeting those of you I haven't yet!

NEW: Picture Makeup Day

Students who attended Back-to-School Prep Days had their photo taken for their ID card and for the yearbook. Students who did not attend BTS Prep Days will get their photo taken during the school day on Tuesday, September 2nd. Retakes for students who are unhappy with their yearbook photo will be on Thursday, October 16th. ID cards will NOT be reprinted on October 16th.

If you would like to order prints of your student's photo, you can do so on the Lifetouch website. Click "Continue as a Guest" and enter the code: EVTM8JWC8.

A special shout out to three Franklin sports teams and their coaches and parents for supplying the muscle to move 5 enormous piles of mulch: Football, Ultimate Frisbee, and Boys Soccer! Class Contributions and Fees

Families who can are asked to help contribute funds to classes and programs each year. Our operational budget does not cover all course supplies and costs, so we rely on contributions from families to enhance the classroom experience for students.

Classes that have optional contributions associated with them are listed on SchoolPay. Donations and payments for PE shirts (required for freshmen), athletic fees, event tickets, uniforms, library fees, sports passes, etc. can also be made through SchoolPay.

Schedule Change Information

Counselors are still working hard to ensure students' schedules are complete and accurate. Please note students must attend all classes listed on StudentVue until your counselor confirms your schedule has been changed either in person or via email. All missed classes will be considered unexcused.

Counselors will meet with students in person, individually, to correct errors to ensure the most personal and efficient process for students. To prioritize student needs and maximize counselor time with students, we ask students to follow this timeline:

  • Week 2, September 2nd-5th: Elective changes. Requests must be lateral moves only. Students must submit the request through their PPS email and are limited to one request.

  • Week 3, September 8th-12th: 11th & 12th grade elective drop for TA/Study Hall only

All course drops made after the 12th result in an automatic “WF” (equivalent to an F). We appreciate your patience as we work on requests in the order they were received.

Attendance

Attendance is taken for every class period that meets on a given day. Please plan to report and excuse all absences in the way that best suits you:

  • Call the attendance office at 503-916-3543
  • Email franklinattend@pps.net
  • Have your student bring a note to the attendance office (located in the main office)
  • For full-day absences, you can self-report on ParentVUE (this does not work for tardies or partial-day absences)

Cell Phone Policy

For the 2025-2026 school year, Franklin will be a phone-free space for all students to foster a more focused and engaging learning environment using a program called Yondr.

While we believe that phones have great utility, we have found that learning and social behavior improve significantly when students are fully engaged with their teachers and classmates. Along with our belief that school climate benefits from a phone-free environment, Portland Public Schools passed a new district-wide cell phone policy requiring students to have their phones away all day. In order to meet the requirements of the district policy, every student will secure their phone and smartwatch in a personally assigned lockable Yondr pouch upon arrival at school. At the end of the school day, students will have access to unlocking stations to open the pouches. Students are responsible for bringing their assigned Yondr pouch to/from school daily. Limited exceptions will be based on specific medical needs.

The cost for the initial purchase and startup for Yondr pouches is sizable. We have added the cost of the Yondr pouches to the list of suggested donations and we will be collecting donations all summer for this cause. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to help cover the start-up costs, please use this link or bring a check to BTS Prep Days.

Need a Locker?

Any student who wishes to have a locker can request one in the main office. No students have been automatically assigned a locker this year.

Trivory

Every student and family member should download the Trivory app to their phones. We use Trivory to send out immediate important school information about activities, clubs and athletics. This is also a great resource for Tri-Met bus schedules and to see the daily bell schedule at your fingertips. Visit trivory.com/franklin to download the app today. Trivory is completely free and you can control your own notification preferences.
